UNCG Spartans Shine on Day 1 of SoCon Outdoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s and women’s track teams competed on day one of the 2024 Southern Conference (SoCon) Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Shauna Yelton Field, hosted by Samford University on Monday.

Andrew Hamilton and Samuel Barnard led the way both qualifying to run in the 800-meter run finals on Tuesday. Hamilton finished fifth with a personal best time of 1:52.34, while Barnard clocked in a time of 1:53.54, taking ninth and the final spot in the final. The top three in each heat plus the next three best times qualified for tomorrow’s final.

Luke Ward and Ethan Long, who both ran in their first 10,000-meter runs of the season, earned top 10 finishes. Ward clocked in a time of 32:17.08, good for fifth, while Long took home seventh with a time of 33:29.13.

On the women’s side, Vicky Sosa, in her first 10,000-meter run of the season, finished in seventh place out of 17 competitors with a time of 37:58.46.

Shay Soukup rounded out the Spartans’ performances on Monday with a 13th place finish in the 800-meter run, clocking in a time of 2:19.07.

The Spartans conclude the 2024 SoCon Track & Field Outdoor Championships tomorrow, Tuesday, May 7 at the Shauna Yelton Field at the Samford Track & Soccer Complex. Track events will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
