No. 2 Softball to Face No. 3 Samford in SoCon Quarterfinal Matchup

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team who earned the No. 2 seed in the 2024 Southern Conference (SoCon) Softball Tournament will face off against the No. 3 seeded Samford Bulldogs on Thursday, May 9 with a first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina.

UNCG (31-24, 13-8 SoCon) have gone 4-2 in their last two weekends of conference series after sweeping Mercer at home and going 1-2 against Wofford in Spartanburg. The Spartans dropped its three-game series against Samford in the 2024 regular season in Birmingham, Ala.

Samford (22-30, 12-9 SoCon) moved onto the second round of the tournament after winning 5-2 against No. 7 Western Carolina on Wednesday.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
The Spartans are coming off a 1-2 weekend against Wofford, where UNCG took the last game with a score of 5-4.
With assistance from other results during the last weekend of play, the Spartans earned the second seed.
Betsy Eatmon hit her third home run of the series, tallying one in each game.
Meredith Harwood hit an RBI single in the fourth to tie the game, and then Blayke Batten hit the game-winning hit, a triple to left field in the fifth.
Reese Byrd tossed 6.1 innings, giving up eight hits and allowing no runs in her fourth win of the season.

WEEKLY & MONTHLY HONORS
Spell was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 26), while Anna White was named SoCon Player of the Week (Feb. 26).
On March 11, Brooklynn Maxwell was named SoCon Player of the Week and Salem Ward was tabbed SoCon Pitcher of the Week.
Maxwell was also named SoCon Player of the Month for all competition during the month of February and March.
Maycin Brown was tabbed SoCon Player of the Week on April 22, bringing UNCG’s total to three recognitions this season.

POSTSEASON AWARDS
Maxwell was named SoCon Player of the Year and to the All-SoCon first team.
Maxwell is the first SoCon Player of the Year for the Spartans since 2014 when Katelyn Bedwell earned the honor. She is also the sixth time in program history that a Spartan has earned the title.
Eatmon was named to the All-SoCon second team and All-Freshman team.
Grace Loftin was voted to the All-SoCon second team.

SPARTAN QUICK HITS
This is the sixth-straight year that UNCG has had 30 or more wins in a season and ninth time in Head Coach Janelle Breneman’s 12 seasons at the helm.
Brooklynn Maxwell is pacing the Spartans with a .385 batting average, 38 RBI, and 15 home runs.
Grace Loftin is second on the team with a .317 batting average, 33 RBI, 12 homers.
Tori Dalehite is third on the team with a .313 batting average with 20 RBI and 20 runs scored.
Jessie Shipley rounds out the Spartans with a .300 batting average or higher, swinging .310 at the plate.
Shipley leads the team with 14 doubles this season.
Salem Ward is pacing the Spartans’ pitching staff with 58 strikeouts in 76.1 innings of work with a 2.93 ERA.
Maddie Spell is second on the team with 68 strikeouts in 104.2 innings.
Spell is pacing the pitching staff with 10 wins this season.

SPARTANS AMONG THE SOCON
Maxwell is leading the SoCon in runs scored and triples, second in on-base percentage and home runs, third in the conference in batting average, slugging percentage, and at bats, and fourth in walks.
Shipley is second with doubles hit.
Ward is fourth in saves and fifth in the league with her 2.93 ERA.
Spell is ninth in the SoCon in strikeouts.
Reese Byrd is one of four pitchers in the SoCon with no losses.
Jorde Chartrand is fifth with 67 hits allowed in the circle.

NATIONAL RANKINGS FOR UNCG
The Spartans are currently ranked in the top-50 nationally across five categories: double plays per game (0.42), doubles (74), home runs per game (1.42), slugging percentage (.495) and walks (214).
Maxwell is ranked 23rd in the country with her 70 hits, 38th with 15 homers, ninth with 138 total bases and 24th with five triples.
Loftin stands out at 20th nationally with a 0.75 walks per game average.

RUNDOWN ON THE BULLDOGS
Sarah Squillace led the Bulldogs with two runs against the Catamounts on day one of the SoCon Tournament on Wednesday.
Campbell and Logan Champion led the way with two RBI apiece.
Newcomb paced the team in the circle, posting seven strikeouts in her 24 batters faced, only allowing one walk, two hits, and zero runs.
Samford went 2-1 in its last regular season series at Mercer. The Bulldogs dropped game one (7-5) but came back to win the next two games (2-1, 9 inn., 12-2) against the Bears to claim the series.
The Bulldogs are second in the conference with a .286 batting average and six shutouts.
McKenzie Newcomb leads the SoCon with a 5.64 strikeout to walk ratio.
Katie Campbell paces the league with four sac flies. Campbell is second in the conference with 49 RBI and a 0.98 RBI per game average.
Champion is leading Samford with 34 runs and three triples.
Campbell leads the squad with 13 homers and 81 total bases. She also stands on the defensive side with 310 catches and 291 putouts.
Jordyn Partain leads Samford’s pitching staff with 93 strikeouts.
Samford is outscoring its opponents 244 to 222 this season.
