N.C. State Wolfpack to play Georgia Bulldogs on Monday, with the Winner on to the College Baseball World Series

N.C. State Wolfpack Drops Super Regional Contest at Georgia, Sets Up Winner-Take-All Matchup on Monday

ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 10 national seed NC State baseball team dropped game two of the Athens Super Regional 11-2 to seventh-seeded Georgia on Sunday afternoon at Foley Field.

Sunday’s setback sets up a winner-take-all matchup between NC State (37-21) and the Bulldogs. A time and TV designation for Monday’s contest have yet to be announced.

Georgia (43-16) second baseman Slate Alford put the Bulldogs ahead in the first with a two-run homer to left-center. Charlie Condon smacked a one-out single before Alford’s two-run shot made it 2-0 in the opening frame.

The Bulldogs used the long ball again in the third to extend their lead. Tre Phelps’ two-out, three-run homer to center field made it 5-0 Georgia heading to the home half of the third frame.

Georgia plated three more in the fourth behind Kolby Branch’s RBI double, Corey Collins’ RBI groundout and Phelps’ bases-loaded RBI hit-by-pitch to make it 8-0. The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the sixth with their third homer of the game for a 9-0 lead. Georgia added runs in the seventh and eighth to push the score to its final margin at 11-2.

Noah Soles put NC State on the board in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI fielder’s choice. Jacob Cozart added the final run for the Pack in the bottom of the eighth when he drilled her 19th homer of the season to the scoreboard.

Georgia starting pitcher Leighton Finley (6-1) notched the win after tossing 6.2 innings with five strikeouts, allowing just one run and eight hits.

Freshman southpaw Ryan Marohn made his NCAA Tournament debut in Sunday’s game, tossing four innings. Senior Hollis Fanning made his NCAA Tournament debut for the Wolfpack, in addition to junior Carson Kelly. The duo threw the final 2 innings for the Pack.

Wolfpack starting pitcher Dominic Fritton (3-6) suffered the loss.

Shortstop Brandon Butterworth paced the Pack with a multi-hit outing.

NC State and Georgia will face off Monday in a winner-take-all matchup at Foley Field. The winner of Monday’s game will advance to the College World Series for an opening-round game against the winner of Kentucky and Oregon State.
