Hoppers' Line-10-10-1 Tourists' Line-6- 7-4
Greensboro Grasshoppers(66-51/26-25)
Asheville Tourists(48-69/20-32)
The Hoppers had a six-run second inning, that really got the team rolling…After being down 1-0 early, the Hoppers moved on top 6-1, after two innings, then here comes the Asheville Tourists with four runs in the fifth inning, and the Tourists pull within one run, at 6-5…And this game looks like it might be slipping away…
But the Greensboro Grasshoppers added a run in the bottom of the fifth and another insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning, plus Greensboro adds on two more runs in the eighth inning, and they go on to win the contest, 10-6…..
It was a three-run home run from Lonnie White Jr.(second inning), a solo homer from Husdon Head(fifth inning), and a two-run dinger from Shawn Ross(eighth inning) that proved to be the difference makers for the Hoppers…Ross with HR # 21, White Jr. with his 14th long ball of the season, and Head hit his 13th home run of 2024…The Home Run/Long Ball/Long Gone power of the Greensboro Grasshoppers returned to First National Bank Field on Saturday night…Good to hear the LONG GONE song coming back for the Jolly Hoppers…
For the night for the Hoppers, it was Lonnie White Jr. going 1-5/HR/3 RBI…Termarr Johnson went 0-4/BB/Run/3 SBs and Johnson now with 19 stolen bases on the season…Shawn Ross 2-5/HR/Run/2 RBI…Mitch Jebb 2-5/Double/2 Runs/2 SBs and Jebb now with 37 stolen bases for the year…Omar Alfonzo 2-4/BB/Run/2 RBI…Josiah Sightler 0-4/BB…Hudson Head 1-3/HR/BB/2 Runs/RBI…P.J. Hilson 1-4/Run…Kalae Harrison 1-4/Run/RBI…
Very efficient starting pitching from the Grasshoppers’ Wilber Dotel, who worked 5 innings, giving up 5 runs, on 4 hits, with 2 BBs/10 Ks/1 HR…Dotel started out giving up that leadoff home run to the Asheville Tourists’ Kenni Gomez, then he really settled down for the 2nd-4th innings, before he let Asheville scratch out four runs in the fifth inning, with a three-run HR from A’ville’s Fernando Caldera being the big blow…
The fifth was the last round-up for Dotel with Darvin Garcia then coming on to get a hold of things, and he did get a Hold, plus after Garcia’s two innings, Mike Walsh came in, and he worked the 8th and 9th innings for the Hoppers on the hill, and Walsh picked up the Save….
The solo HR from Kenni Gomez and the three-run double by Fernando Caldera were the biggest hits of the night for Asheville…The Hopper pitchers and the Tourists pitchers struck out 13 batters each, with A’ville looking to Alaine Pena, Jeremy Molero, and Franny Cobos for short sample-size innings, but Manuel Urias was the long man for the Tourists, as Urias was out there for four innings, and gave up 2 runs on 4 hits, with 1 BB and 5 Ks, and he gave up a home run to the Hoppers’ Hudson Head….A’ville starter Pena allowed 6 runs, on 3 hits, with 2 BBs/3 Ks, and he gave up the three-run blast to Lonnie White Jr…
That is pretty much the book on the game, with just two more key points to hit, and those would be the four errors by the Asheville Tourists and the five big Stolen Bases by the Hoppers, with Johnson swipping 3, and Jebb taking 2…
