UNCG Volleyball Drops Contest at Virginia Tech, 3-0

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team dropped a 3-0 contest with Virginia Tech on Saturday (24-26, 18-25, 13-25) to conclude the Hokie Invitational in Cassell Coliseum.

HOW IT HAPPENED
With the first set tied at two, kills from Allie Sweet and Emily Hanlon gave the Spartans the lead for UNCG to maintain control for most of game one. The Blue & Gold led by as much as five in the set. However, the Hokies chipped their way back into the match. With UNCG on top, 24-23, Virginia Tech notched a 3-0 run to come away with the extended first set, 26-24.

A block assist from Madeline Timmerman and Hanlon put UNCG on the board first in set two. The Hokies quickly responded with a 3-1 run to take the lead and maintain it for the rest of the second game. Virginia Tech claimed set two, 25-18.

Despite a kill from Hanlon putting UNCG up first in set three, the Hokies were able to respond with a 5-0 run, taking the advantage and holding it for the remainder of the match. Virginia Tech secured the third and final set, 25-13 for the 3-0 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

Sweet led the Spartans with nine kills.
Madeline led the squad with five total blocks.
Hanlon followed closely behind with four blocks.
Izora Gragg paced UNCG with 24 assists.
Chloe Nussbaum led the way as the libero with 14 digs.

UP NEXT
The Spartans will close out their non-conference schedule by hosting the Greensboro Invitational from Sept. 20-21 in Fleming Gym. UNCG will face Tennessee Tech at 1:00 p.m. and Georgetown at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20. The team will conclude the tournament with a matchup to Marshall on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 2:00 p.m.

All regular season home games are free admission.
