With us tonight we have:
Bryant Roche, from the News and Record, and in with us to talk about last Friday night’s high school football games that involved our three Guilford County teams…Eastern Guilford fell at Western Alamance, 17-7…Smith went to Thomasville, and the Golden Eagles were losers for the first time this season, dropping a 13-8 decision to the Bulldogs of Thomasville…Plus High Point Andrews is no longer Unbeaten, after the HPA Red Raiders were taken down by the North Rowan Cavaliers, 55-36….971 Total Yards of offense in that game…
This week we have Northwest Guilford at Western Guilford, with both teams at (3-0)…Ragsdale(2-1) is at Northern Guilford(3-0)…Grimsley(3-0) visits Southwest Guilford(2-1), in some of the key games of interest…We will also touch on the move of Wil Perry stepping down as the basketball coach at Southern Guilford to become the Athletic Director for the SG Storm…Another one of those HS football games that might get interesting is Northeast Guilford(1-2) at Eastern Guilford(0-3)…Not sure why, but this game has intrigue written all over it..
Next up we have the former Western Guilford running back John Blust…NWG at WG is a big game this week, and for Western to be relevant at this stage of the season, is one of those things that make you go, Huh, right there…And the football background of our local rep in the State House, John Blust, is very interesting too…He carried the football for the WG Hornets back in the day, and still relishes those high school football memories today…We will touch on as many of those as possible tonight…Little known facts about John Blust from his high school football career at Western Guilford…
John Blust scored the very first touchdown in the new Western Guilford high school football stadium, back in the early 1970’s…That stadium is now named the, “Doug Henderson Stadium”…John Blust only played one year of varsity football while in high school…That was it, he played for the varsity team, his senior year only…Was sent down to the JV team his junior season, and then was on the Varsity, as a starting running back his last year in high school…And he had a remarkable senior season…He won the starting job at running back, he scored the first TD in the new Western Guilford football stadium, which mostly just some bleachers back in that first year…He also scored a TD at Northwest Guilford, where I think the Hornets topped the NWG Vikings that night…One year to make his mark, and John Blust broke the mold…He scored touchdowns, started pretty much all the games, and won several postseason awards…His was that of a “Dream Come True” for a young high school football player…He played for Coach Joe Robinson, who the field at Western Guilford is now named for…John Blust also played basketball and he ran track for Western Guilford, and he sure enough left his mark, in Western Guilford athletics/sports history…
Now maybe he can share some rub with this year’s group at WG…The “John Blust” kick off the rust, and get running for paydirt and glory again…Will also talk to him about his current role in the North Carolina House of Representatives, and his thoughts on Howard Coble, a man who we feel, was sort of a mentor to John Blust, back in John’s early political days…Maybe some Bob and Linda Shaw influence too, who knows….John Blust with us tonight, on Football in Focus…
And we missed Mitchell Summers, the swift and strong running back from Grimsley High School, a few weeks back, and we will try and get him back in here with us tonight, and find out what keeps Mitchell Summers running….How he does overcome the fact, that when he goes into every Friday night football game, he knows the opposing football team is out to get him…How does his acceleration change as he hits the line of scrimmage and how does it change again, when he gets to Linebacker level…What is his diet like, and how does he stay healthy…Very few losses while playing at Grimsley, how are the Whirlies able to keep up the intensity every week, and how do they make themselves find a way to get better every week…The most impressive team in the Metro 4-A Conference this season???? Toughest team Grimsley has faced so far, and maybe it was East Forsyth in the preseason scrimmage, and is East the team, other than Grimsley, to beat around here…Just a few of the things we will be talking about tonight, on our Football in Focus Show…
