Storm Delay Not Enough, Men’s Soccer falls in Conference Opener
Quakers unable to overcome Wildcats defensive dominance

GREENSBORO, N.C – The Guilford College men’s soccer team hosted their first conference home opener on Wednesday night, at Appenzeller Field, against Randolph College, falling short by a score of 1-0 against the Wildcats
The Quakers were unsuccessful in today’s match up, dropping to 3-4-0 on the season. The Wildcats improved to 2-2-4.
Chris Kelley (Lexington, N.C.) got the nod in goal for Guilford, securing two saves amongst the sevens he faced. Falling to 2-3-0 in net. Carter Kelley made the start in net for Randolph, improving to 3-2-4 for Randolph, making one save among the single shot attempt by the hosts.
The Quakers looked to get ahead on the impending weather, as the scheduled time was pushed forward for 6 P.M, In an attempt to beat the weather. Unfortunately, luck was not on our side and the game was delayed for about an hour until gameplay resumed, with about 30 minutes left to play in the first half.
The first 45 were a bit of a stalemate, as both teams went back and forth, exchanging possessions and attempting to find a breakthrough on the offensive side. Randolph was able to sneak in four shot attempts, with one on target. Kelly made his presence known with a great save, after a shot attempt by Anelka Ngoy, who placed it at the top right of the goal frame, but was quickly rejected, resulting in a corner kick.
In the second half, The Quakers were met with a pair of counters and offensive attempts by the Wildcats. In the 57th minute, a freekick was granted to the Wildcats, around the 25 yard line, Gabe Barragan sent a cross in to the box, Kelley attempted to clear the ball with a punch but missed the execution, resulting in a tap-in by Gavin Leverette, securing the winning goal for the Wildcats.
At the 67th mark, GC formed a pair of passes amongst the midfield, Chris Hercules (Greensboro, N.C.) executed a quick dump, off the edge of his cleat, making way for landon Metzler (Cornelius, N.C.), dribbled into the 18’ and ripped a shot but was denied by Wildcat keeper, Carter Kelley.
Guilford looks to stay at home as they face Washington and Lee University, in a conference matchup on September 28. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 P.M.

Women’s Tennis Drops Home Opener vs Pfeiffer
Mendez Continues to Impress, Securing Third Straight Singles

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. – The Guilford College women’s tennis team hosted their first matchup at McMichael Centennial Class Courts on Wednesday afternoon, against Pfeiffer University, falling by a score of 5-2 against the Falcons.
Guilford receives their first loss of the season, moving to 1-1 on the season. Pfeiffer University improves to 2-1.
Guilford showcased some strong performances at the top of the box score, and fought hard throughout the matches.
The doubles competition proved to be a key factor in the outcome. The Quaker duo of Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Erika Mendez secured a victory over Megan Rekieta and Sydney Cohen, winning the match by a score of 7-5, in the top flight of doubles. However, Pfeiffer’s doubles teams claimed victories in the remaining two matches, giving them an early lead.
In singles play, Belnap and Mendez both delivered impressive wins. The former defeated Haley Ingenito in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) in the top flight of singles. Mendez secured a straight-set victory in #2 singles, over Rekieta (6-2, 6-2). With this win, the freshman achieved her third -straight win in singles competitions. Unfortunately, the Quakers dropped the remaining matches, including a close three-set bout in the sixth flight, by Bethany Lupo (Tabor City, N.C) vs Kristen Colie , (7-6, 1-6, 4-7).
Jolie Nhouyvanisvong (Greensboro, N.C), Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C), and Amy Soto Salgado, made appearances in their respective matches, with Nhouyanivsvong competing on court three, Sizemore on court four, and Salgado on court five.
The team looks to bounce back as they host in-state foe, Winston-Salem State University September 28. Start time is set for 12 p.m.

Volleyball Has Triumphant Sweep Over Hollins
Several Quakers saw action on the court in blow out against Hollins
GREENSBORO, N.C. – A wide range of players contributed to the victory as Guilford College conquered Hollins University, 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-10) on Wednesday night on Jack Jensen Court in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
The Quakers now rise to a 5-9 record while Hollins falls to a 2-14 record.
Key factors in the win for Guilford were Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.), Natalie Moore (Talbott, Tenn.), and Zoe Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C.) all with five kills a piece. Madison Bozarth (Greensboro, N.C.) was all over it on defense with a baker’s dozen digs.
Statistical leaders for Hollins were Selena Wolfe with team-high five kills, Anisia Dean who dished out 12 assists, and Rachel Hull finishing the night with half-a-dozen digs.
The Quakers got off to a strong start, with kills from Chrisbel Alcantara (San Juan, P.R.), Maddi Page (Jonesboro, Ga.), Haley Pasour (Winterville, N.C.), and Moore boosting their confidence. Vanessa Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) welcomed herself to the party with two of her four kills to extend the lead 11-4. Hollins was unable to string together more than two consecutive points for the rest of the set. Consecutive kills by Kaci Johnson, along with kills from Pasour, Vanessa Johnson, and Moore, combined with attacking and service errors, led to the Quakers’ 25-13 set victory.
In set two, there was a significant player rotation seen throughout the rest of the match for Guilford including Bailey Prewitt (Kalispell, Mt.) as she added two kills in this set, Lacie Evans (Statesville, N.C.) made her second appearance this season with season-best six assists, and Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.) dished out four assists. Kaci Johnson and Moore were the spark that lit the Quakers’ offense and inspired a 6-0 run. Wolfe’s kill silenced Guilford momentarily until GC harvested yet another 6-0 run, making the score 19-8. Cassidy Henderson added some late kills for Hollins, but Pasour, Whisnant, and company closed out the set, securing another set win for Guilford, 25-13.
Back-to-back kills from Page, a kill by Whisnant, combined with Hollins’ attacking errors and a pair of aces, pushed the score to 8-0. HU quickly responded with their longest scoring run of four points, capitalizing on GC’s errors. Angel Brown (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) alongside Page added points during the 9-1 run for the Quakers. HU attempted a comeback due to a Wolfe-kill and using GC’s errors to their slight advantage, but kills from Alcantara, Vanessa Johnson, and consecutive kills from Whisnant sealed the final set 25-10, completing the Quakers’ sweep.
Guilford is at home again on Jack Jensen Court facing Eastern Mennonite on Friday, Oct. 4th at 6:00 p.m.
