Guilford College Men’s Golf Stands in 18th at October Classic
Quakers battle through round-two adversity against top golf programs at Golfweek tournament

SANDESTIN, Fla. – Amongst nationally ranked teams, the Guilford College golf team finished 18th out of 24th place at the Golfweek October Classic at the Raven Golf Club Sunday through Tuesday. After a tough day two with 301 (+17), GC finished the tournament with a team score of 874.

James Alden (East Northport, N.Y.) was the standout Quaker in Florida and beat his personal best this season with a total score of 212. Compared to last year on the same course, he was 19 points better. At the end of day three, Alden moved up 19 spots to be tied for 20th place out of 120. In the par fives, Alden was tied for second at 4.58 (-5). Round one he walked away with 69 (-2), round two with 75 (+4), and round three with 68 (-3).

The second-highest finisher was Evan Mendyk (Summerfield, N.C.) as he finished the Golfweek tournament with a score of 218 and tied for 56th place after moving up 41 spaces. Mendyk was two-over round one at 73, while round two he scored 78 (+7), and played his best round of golf in round three with 67 (-4). That last round was the catalyst for his performance and was able to propel his standing from T97 to T56.

Next for Guilford was Oliver Paddon (Hingham, Mass.) who also tied for 56 with a total score of 218. Despite the hardships the Quakers faced day two, Paddon was the top-Quaker performer at 72 (+1). As for rounds one and three, he started and ended the contest with 73 (+2).

Thomas McNally (Charlotte, N.C.) was the next Quaker finishing with 229 and tied for 107th. During day one, he played his best round and scored 75 (+4). In round two, McNally scored a 78 (+7), but he improved in round three, finishing with a 76 (+5).

Parker Cumbea (Fuquay Varina, N.C.) concluded the October Classic on a strong note with a final-round score of 75 (+4), placing him tied for 110th overall with a total of 230 strokes. In round one, Cumbea scored an eight-over with 79 points, and in round two, he improved with a five-over with 76 points.

The Quakers will host the next contest here in Greensboro on Monday October 28th through Tuesday October 29th while competing in the O’Briant Jensen Memorial.
