The ninth week of football in Rockingham County has come to a close. Morehead enjoyed a bye week after making it to a .500 record in conference play, while Reidsville took down Walkertown to continue their longstanding conference win streak. On the negative side, Rockingham was destroyed on the road when they took on Dudley, and McMichael met the same ill fate when they took on West Stokes.
Reidsville had a home matchup against Walkertown, hoping to become the final undefeated team in the Mid-State 2A. Things were looking considerably grim for the Rams, as they fell, 14-20, at halftime, and were in danger of losing their first conference matchup since 2011. However, they made a quick comeback, off of the back of Jariel Cobb, the Air Force Falcons commit, and would eventually secure a 41-26 victory to improve to 8-0 as a part of their twenty game win streak. They hold the third-longest active winning streak in the state.
Rockingham and McMichael, unfortunately, had parallel games.
Rockingham traveled to Greensboro to take on Dudley, on the homecoming night of the Dudley Panthers. This game also coincided with the week of the greatest homecoming on Earth at NCA&T, forcing Rockingham to enter a very hostile environment. Rockingham was down, 49-0, at the half, and the running clock in the second half made it a 70-0 Dudley victory. Of the twelve times the two teams have played, this was the most points that Dudley has scored.
McMichael’s fifth loss in a row came to West Stokes, who have been very hot as of late aside from their relatively close loss to Reidsville last week. McMichael lost the matchup, 49-0, and the Fighting Phoenix have not scored any points since September 13th. Since their loss to Morehead five weeks ago, they have lost by an average of fifty-eight to zero. Things can only go up from here.
Morehead, still riding high after their second win in conference play last week, got to enjoy a bye week, as they prepare to try and make a push for the playoffs, something no one in the county was expecting.
Next week, all four teams in the county will be competing, three of which will be staying inside the county. Morehead heads to Winston-Salem to battle North Forsyth in one of the most pivotal matchups of the year, one that fans will certainly keep their eyes on. McMichael continues their tradition of playing teams who just played Reidsville when they take on Walkertown at MacField Stadium, and Reidsville stays at home when they tee off with T.W. Andrews. Finally, in what is considered the game of the week for Rockingham County, the Rockingham County Cougars try to punch their ticket to the postseason with a game against the Northeast Guilford Rams at Cougar Pride Stadium, where they are undefeated this year.
