Week ten of Rockingham County football has come and gone. Reidsville got a massive win, while McMichael lost 38-6. And the two most pivotal games for standings-sake did not go the way the Rock wanted, as Morehead lost to North Forsyth, 39-6, and Rockingham participated in a 21-7 loss that will have serious playoff implications.
Starting off with the only positive, Reidsville extended their winning streak to twenty-one games, the third-longest in the state. The fact that everyone else in the county scored less than ten makes Reidsville’s 128 games of double digit scoring in a row even more impressive, the longest in the state. They defeated T.W. Andrews, 70-16, clinching the Mid-State 2A once again to extend their conference win streak to sixty-eight games in a row. Jariel Cobb scored five touchdowns, four of which were rushing, bringing his total touchdowns this year to twenty-four. Also, Braxton Johnson got some playing time and threw his first touchdowns of his varsity career. Aside from some flags and run defense troubles, Reidsville had another impressive night in front of their fans on Senior Night.
Rockingham’s offense continued to struggle in a rough night against Northeast Guilford. Coming into the game, they had won every game they won last year and lost every game they lost last year, but this is the first time they broke away from that, as they defeated NEGHS last year. With this 21-7 loss, Rockingham loses their opportunity to make it to third place in the Mid-State 3A, reducing their playoff chances. Next up, they go down to Winston-Salem for a matchup with the Simon G. Atkins Camels.
Morehead took on North Forsyth, and failed to hold onto their spot as fourth in the Mid-State 2A with a 39-6 loss. This loss halts the momentum Morehead was enjoying as they had into their last week of the season. Due to their strength of schedule, it is a real possibility that this two-win Morehead team makes the 2A NCHSAA postseason.
McMichael finally scored for their first time in forty-two days, but the Fighting Phoenix still weren’t get able to get over the hump. They have just one win this season following this 38-6 loss to Walkertown, but they do have an opportunity coming up in the final week. It’ll be a battle of the beaten when T. Wingate Andrews, 0-5 in conference play with a 1-8 overall record, will play McMichael, who is also 0-5 in conference play with a 1-8 overall record.
The Reidsville Rams remain the title contender and one of the favorites to go all the way heading into their final-week matchup with Morehead. Morehead hopes to sneak into the playoffs despite just two wins, and it will be interesting to see what happens. Rockingham also hopes to make it in as they take on Atkins next week on the road, holding on tight to that winning record as they try to maintain it and slide into the NCHSAA 3A Playoffs. Finally, McMichael, who is out of the playoff picture, plays for pride as they try to avoid being the worst team in the Mid-State 2A.
