Over 3600 dollars raised by hoops contest for a cause

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Over 360 people packed around the Jack Jensen Court in the Ragan-Brown Field House to witness some high-caliber basketball, with the best of intentions, as the No. 17 Guilford College men’s basketball team duked it out with No. 23 Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday evening.

“It was really gratifying to see the Guilford community rally and partner with our friends at Hampden Sydney for such a worthwhile cause,” Director of Athletics, Bill Foti noted. “Everyone involved had a lot of fun.”

In the end, 3,613 dollars were raised in revenue from ticket sales and other donations with all proceeds going to the American Red Cross disaster relief efforts for Hurricane Helene. In addition, numerous nonperishable food items and clothes for cold weather were collected to be distributed by Democracy Green.

“It was incredible how the Guilford College and Hampden-Sydney communities came together to support this event,” Quakers Head Coach, Tom Palombo said. “We were able to do some good and raise funds for a lot of people who are struggling. A special thanks to all the volunteers for their help, and to Coach Kimbrough for agreeing to the event.”

Hampden-Sydney Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough added, “We are glad we could team up with Guilford College to help the hurricane relief efforts. Thank you to everyone who came out to support!”

The Guilford College Athletics Department would like to especially thank the table crew, public address, and officials, all of whom participated in a volunteer capacity.

The contest proved to be quite the draw among the Greensboro community, and they were treated to quite the spectacle on the court as well with some high-caliber Division-III basketball on display, finishing in an 80-63 final score in favor of Hampden-Sydney.
