BREVARD, N.C. – The Guilford College women’s basketball team traveled southwest and claimed victory over Brevard College with a score of 88-74 at Boshamer Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.) achieved career-highs in points, rebounds, assists, and steals, while Julianna Walter (Taylorsville, N.C.) set a career-high in assists.
With this win, Guilford secured their third consecutive 3-0 start to a season and advanced their record against Brevard to 2-0 all-time.
Zoe Bayer (Les Sables d’Olonne, France) led the charge as she delivered a team-high 19 points, shot 7-15 from the field, and had five steals. She was joined by Scott, who made her career-high of 17 points and went 7-11 from the field while being 50% from the three at 3-6 3PM. Scott also earned career-highs in rebounds, assists, and steals with five, two, and two, respectively. Courtney McMillan (Lexington, N.C.) upgraded her season-high scoring 16 points with a respectable 7-12 FG and was flawless from the charity stripe. With 56 points in the paint, it was clear to see that the Quakers were in the driver’s seat. GC exploited BC’s mistakes by forcing 25 turnovers, scoring 23 off of those, and earning 19 second-chance points as well. Walter was also a key contributor with career-high five assists paired with ten points.
Standouts for the away team included Jada Petty-Wilkins with game-high 21 points and two steals, Josie Hester who finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, and Christena Rhone with 17 points, six rebounds, in 26 minutes.
Guilford jabbed first with a strong offensive push, scoring 27 points while holding Brevard to just 12. McMillan contributed multiple tip-ins and steals as well as Scott and Carleigh Perry (Faith, N.C.) also chipping in with crucial second-chance points, helping GC establish an early 10-0 run. Bayer extended the lead with a fastbreak three-pointer and Jael Hall (Charlotte, N.C.) added three consecutive free throws after a foul. Petty-Wilkins tried to keep her team’s head above water, scoring key jumpers, but Guilford’s defensive pressure and consistent scoring extended their advantage to make the score of the first quarter 27-12.
A fast-paced transition game led by Walter and Perry helped the Quakers extend their lead to as much as 17 points. Walter was pivotal, contributing with fastbreak layups and assists, while Brevard found brief sparks on the offensive side through key shots by Petty-Wilkins and Hester, narrowing the gap to 8 points mid-quarter. The Tornados briefly made the most of Guilford’s errors and amped their rebounding game (they won the board battle in the end with 42 vs. Guilford’s 38), with Naliyah Boyce and Petty-Wilkins playing key roles in forcing steals and second-chance opportunities. Despite Brevard’s late push, Guilford responded with steady scoring from Skyler Furr (Warrenton, N.C.), who snatched nine boards, scored eight points, and had two blocks, along with Scott, finishing the quarter strong with a 46-30 lead.
The third quarter featured a strong performance by Guilford as they maintained control, extending their lead over Brevard. Guilford’s offense was anchored by Scott, who nailed two crucial three-pointers, and Bayer, who contributed with multiple key baskets inside. While Rhone’s scoring surge (including a three-pointer late in the quarter) temporarily gave Brevard hope, Guilford’s consistent scoring, particularly in the paint, kept them ahead. Defensive plays like steals by Scott and Furr helped secure the momentum for Guilford, who entered the fourth quarter with a 67-53 lead.
Strong inside plays, including key layups from McMillan and Scott, who also hit a crucial three-pointer late in the quarter, put the Quakers in a position to win. Brevard made late strides, with Hester leading a electric comeback attempt by hitting three 3-pointers and scoring 12 points in the quarter. However, despite narrowing the gap to just seven points with three minutes remaining, the Tornados folded under pressure. Guilford’s defense forced several turnovers, and timely scoring from McMillan and Scott helped the team pull away. Ultimately, GC’s balanced attack and composure in the final minutes cemented their fate with a win.
It’s home sweet home for the Quakers as they are back on Jack Jensen Court to battle against the Knights of Southern Virginia University on Tuesday, November 19th at 6 PM to continue non-conference play.
