GREENSBORO, N.C. – Courtney McMillan (Lexington, N.C.), who went 50 percent from the floor, Carleigh Perry (Faith, N.C.), who was just one shy of her season-high in assists with three, and Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.), who surpassed her season-high in rebounds, made some noise to ring in the new year as the Guilford College women’s basketball team stung the Hornets of Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon on Jack Jensen Court in the Ragan-Brown Field House

For the 18th meeting, Guilford continues to lead the series 13-5 and leaves the contest with a 9-3 record, 3-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) while the Hornets of Shenandoah walk away with a 7-4 record, 3-1 in the conference.

Ballers for the Quakers included McMillan with her second double-double of the year with 18 points paired with 10 boards, Perry with an explosive 16 points and went 4-6 from beyond the arc as well as going 6-12 from the field, and Scott secured her first double-double for the season with a dozen points alongside 11 rebounds.

Statistical leaders for the Hornets were Terese Greene with 17 points and went 6-7 from the charity stripe, Addisyn Banks with eight points paired with half-a-dozen boards, and Maddie Kimble walked away with eight points, three assists, and two steals.

In the first, McMillan dominated the paint with ten points, including a fastbreak layup and a late three-pointer. Scott added five points, a three-pointer, and strong defensive energy for Guilford. Shawnise Campbell and Greene led Shenandoah’s offense, combining for three layups and an assist, while Gabby Krystofiak’s two assists and Kimble’s early jumper contributed. Defensive efforts by Skyler Furr (Warrenton, N.C.) and Markayla Massenburg (Raleigh, N.C.) kept the game competitive, encouraging GC to capitalize on turnovers to close the quarter with a strong lead, 17-10.

The Quakers extended their lead in the second quarter through key contributions from McMillan, Scott, and Julianna Walter (Taylorsville, N.C.) who had nine points and six boards. McMillan’s defensive presence, Scott’s fastbreak layup and free throws, and Walter’s scoring in the paint kept Guilford in control. Greene and Kimble provided offensive sparks, with Greene adding a layup, free throws, and a steal, while Kimble assisted and scored in the paint. Despite turnovers from both teams, Guilford’s ability to capitalize on the Hornet’s mistakes helped them maintain a double-digit lead, ending the quarter up 33–21.

The third quarter saw GC maintain their lead over SU while McMillan played a pivotal role early, scoring key layups, including a fastbreak basket assisted by Scott. Walter and Perry also contributed with a three-pointer and solid defensive efforts, respectively. Krystofiak showed resilience with a swat and boards, while Greene and Banks kept the team honest, including Greene’s free throws and Banks’ mid-range jumpers. Despite these efforts, Guilford capitalized on Shenandoah’s turnovers and second-chance opportunities, keeping their lead steady throughout the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Perry’s offensive dominance and key assists from Walter continued from the third. Scott and McMillan added crucial points in the paint and at the line. For SU, Kimble, Emily Williams, who ended with seven points, and Greene added scoring and defensive stops, but Guilford’s efficiency and strong rebounding sealed the win, securing a 66-54 victory and dished the Hornet’s their first conference loss.

GC plays in the Ragan-Brown Field House once again to face ODAC opponent Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday Jan. 8th. The Quakers face-off against the Yellow-Jackets at 5 p.m.
