Bill Belichick has sparked a debate about the name of the Lombardi Trophy.
(To us/me at GreensboroSports.com, this seems like a very bad idea…So much history there behind the Lombardi Trophy.)

The current North Carolina Tar Heels head coach and longtime head coach of the New England Patriots suggested on the “Let’s Go!” podcast that the Lombardi Trophy, which is awarded to the winner of the Super Bowl, be renamed after Tom Brady.

Brady won six Super Bowl rings with Belichick. He ended up finishing his career with an NFL-record seven Super Bowl rings. Brady is also a five-time Super Bowl MVP, having been awarded the title more times than any other player in NFL history.

On the podcast, Belichick was trying to emphasize the point that players win games.

“You can’t win games without good players,” said Belichick. “I don’t care who the coach is. It’s impossible.” He then reflected on some of the greatest players he coached during his time with the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns and Patriots, like Ty Law, Tedy Bruschi and Brady. “Those are the guys that won the game, man. I didn’t make any tackles. I didn’t make any kicks. And as a coach, you want to give your players a chance to win.”

Host of the “Let’s Go!” podcast and Emmy Award-winning journalist Jim Gray responded to Belichick, saying, “They don’t name it the [Bart] Starr Trophy. It’s named the Lombardi Trophy.”

Belichick also jokingly responded to Gray, saying, “Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy. He won seven of them.”

Green Bay Packers fans probably don’t want this to gain any traction. The trophy is currently named after Vince Lombardi, the Hall of Fame coach who led the Packers to wins in the first two Super Bowls. Lombardi also won three championships with the Packers before the Super Bowl era.

The Super Bowl began in 1966, superseding the NFL Championship Game. From 1967-1970, the Super Bowl trophy was engraved with the words “World Professional Football Championship.” It was renamed the Lombardi Trophy in 1971 to honor the legendary coach, who died the previous year.
