The Bishop McGuinness Villains took on the College Prep and Leadership Academy Royals in the Northwest Piedmont Conference Tournament Championship game on Friday night. The game turned into an instant classic, with the Villains battling back from a halftime deficit to bring home a trophy on a game winning and-1.
Down 2 with 9 seconds left in the game, senior Nicholas Graves brought down an offensive rebound, drove to the rim, fought through a foul, and connected on the game tying shot. After a brief pause for a 5th foul on a Royal player, he finished the play and sealed the game for the Villains with the game winning free throw.
Graves led the Villains with 22 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Forward Alex Waterfield finished the game with 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Junior Arop Chom added 8 points and 7 rebounds.
Bishop will start their NCHSAA tournament journey next Tuesday night at home against an opponent to be determined this weekend.
