UNCG Softball Earns Two Five-Inning Wins, Defeating Sacred Heart & Elon

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball secured two five-inning victories on Sunday at the UNCG Softball Stadium. The Spartans won 8-0 against Sacred Heart and then 16-4 over Piedmont Triad foe Elon.

GAME 1: UNCG 8 – Sacred Heart 0 (5 inn.)

After Addy Berry retired three-straight batters in the top of the first, the Spartans supported their pitcher with eight runs on three hits and one error.
With runners on second and third with one out, Jorde Chartrand singled through the right side to score Samantha Beck for a 1-0 advantage.
On an 0-1 count, Laney Deane crushed her second home run of the season over the left center wall bringing home Chartrand and Grace Loftin, 4-0.
Macy Michael later connected for her sixth homer of the season, a two-run shot down the left field line for a 6-0 advantage.
Later in the frame, Beck came back up to the plate and with the shortstop’s error, the Spartans tacked on two more runs extending the lead to, 8-0.
Neither team pushed across a run in the remaining innings, giving UNCG its third shutout of the season, 8-0, and fourth run rule victory of the season.
Deane went 1-for-2 with one runs scored and three RBI.
Michael went 1-for-2 with one run scored and two RBI.
Chartrand tossed 5.0 innings and struck out eight batters.

GAME 2: UNCG 16 – Elon 4 (5 innings)

The Spartans scored three runs in the first inning on Loftin’s RBI single and Samantha Beck’s two-run double.
UNCG broke open the game with 10 runs on eight hits in the second inning to take a 13-0 lead over the Phoenix.
Elon bounced back with a two-run home run in the top of the third, cutting the deficit to 11, 13-2.
The Phoenix scored another two runs in the top of the fourth, before the Spartans countered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, 16-4.
Loftin hit a two-run single with one out and then Salem Ward hit a sacrifice fly to left center for the third run of the inning.
Elon put two runners on in the top of the fifth, but the Spartans retired the side to hold on for the win, 16-4.
The 16 runs matches the most runs with the Spartans’ 16-14 win over Toledo this season.
This is the ninth game with 10 or more hits this season.
Four Spartans had multi-hit games, including Hadley Gardner (3-for-3), Kaylyn Belfield (3-for-3), Loftin (3-for-3) and Beck (2-for-3).

The Spartans are scheduled to travel to Conway, South Carolina, to face non-conference foe Coastal Carolina on Tuesday, March 4 at 4:00 p.m. at St. John Stadium.
