Elon Prevails in Wednesday Meeting with Baseball
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell 12-2 while hosting the Elon Phoenix for a non-conference contest on Wednesday night at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Elon’s Ryan Sprock put the Phoenix on the board first three at-bats into the game when he pulled a no-doubt solo home run over the wall in left. Vince Fattore then singled up the middle to score another pair of runs later in the inning to make it 3-0 Elon.
The Phoenix tacked on two more runs in the second inning when Alex Duffey blooped a single into shallow right with two outs, allowing Kenny Mallory Jr. and Sprock to score from third and second, respectively. After two innings, Elon led 5-0.
Duffey extended Elon’s lead to 7-0 during the fourth frame after he lined a single into centerfield to score two more runs. The Phoenix went up 9-0 with two more runs in the inning from a two-run double down the line in left by Charlie Granatell.
UNCG got on the board with one run crossing the plate in the fourth. After Trey Truitt led off the bottom of the inning with a double to left-center, he scored on a single that was dropped into shallow left by Branton Jernigan. However, the Spartans still trailed the Phoenix by eight after four innings, 9-1.
After three and a half scoreless innings, the Spartans scored their second run of the evening in the bottom of the eighth. Truitt got it started with his second hit of the game, a one-out single to right, before advancing to second on a passed ball. Truitt then scored on a single down the first-base line by Branton Jernigan. UNCG trailed Elon 9-2 after eight stanzas.
