Miller’s 11 Strikeouts and Holland’s Two-Run Single Sends Baseball Past N.C. A&T
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team won 4-2 over the North Carolina A&T Aggies in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Junior right-handed pitcher Jay Miller took the ball for the Spartans to make his fifth start of the season. In seven innings of work, Miller struck out a career-high 11 batters while allowing just four hits and a pair of runs (one earned) with one walk surrendered. Danny Thompson Jr. entered the game in relief to begin the eighth and threw two no-hit innings with three strikeouts.
Jacob Budzik put UNCG on the board first with a no-doubt solo home run blasted out to left. After two innings, the Spartans led the Aggies 1-0.
North Carolina A&T’s AJ Jones tied the game with a solo home run of his own launched out to right in the top of the fourth frame. It was the Aggies first hit of the afternoon and evened the score, 1-1.
The Spartans reclaimed a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the fourth with another solo home run out to left-center by Luke Holland.
The Aggies tied the game during the fifth inning, 2-2. After Bruce Wyche singled and stole second, he dashed over to third on a throw to first following a dropped third strike. When UNCG attempted to retire Wyche with a throw across the diamond, it was errant and allowed him to score an unearned run when the ball ended up behind third base in foul territory.
After Jeremy Wolf hit a leadoff double and Trey Truitt and Parker Wight reached via back-to-back walks to load the bases, Luke Holland roped a single into left to score two runs, making it 4-2 Spartans.
Thompson Jr. returned to the mound for the ninth after entering in relief prior to the eighth inning and pitched a 1-2-3 final frame to secure the 4-2 victory for the Spartans.
