Trustees Bachmann, Benjamin, Grant, and Rice Reappointed
GREENSBORO N.C. –NC Greensboro (UNCG) today announced the reappointment of four veteran trustees to second terms on the Board of Trustees.
The UNC System Board of Governors has reappointed Trustees Ms. Anita Bachmann, Ms. Margaret Benjamin, Dr. Ernest Grant, and Mr. Tim Rice to second terms running July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2029.

Anita Bachmann is CEO of the North Carolina Market for UnitedHealthcare’s Community Plans. She is an accomplished executive with extensive, progressive experience in healthcare administration, business operations, healthcare delivery systems, business development, technology, clinical strategy, and regulatory/legislative affairs. Prior to this role, Bachmann was Vice President of Business Development for UnitedHealthcare Community & State nationally and Market Leader in North Carolina. She has also served as Senior Vice President of Health Reform Strategy at Optum and Vice President of Health Care Reform at UnitedHealthcare. With more than 30 years of industry experience, Bachmann has a strong background in integrated delivery systems management, organizational and human resources management, healthcare operations, business strategy execution, and relationship management. She has been named an Outstanding Woman in Business and a Power Player by Triad Business Journal, received the Journal’s C-Suite Award and is a past recipient of the Greensboro Chamber’s Athena Leadership Award.?Bachmann earned a M.H.S. in Health Services Administration from Medical University of South Carolina and graduated from University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School Executive Leadership Program.?
A UNCG alumna, Margaret Benjamin has long been a zealous advocate for the arts, with a particular focus on museums and the essential role they play in our communities. Over the years, she has lent her expertise to UNCG’s Weatherspoon Art Museum in both philanthropic and advisory capacities. A native of New Orleans, Benjamin is nationally respected for her museum advocacy. She sits on the board of the Museum Trustee Association, a national organization for the volunteer boards that govern museums. At a Congressional ceremony in Washington, DC, she received the 2017 Champion of Museums award from the American Alliance of Museums for her record of exemplary advocacy and was recognized as a 2018 AAM Star Advocate. In 2018, she and husband Bill received the United Way of Greater Greensboro’s Legacy Award in honor of their legacy of giving and community impact, shared dedication to service, and exceptional support of programs that transform lives in our community. Benjamin is also the recipient of the Junior League of Greensboro’s Sustainer of Distinction Award for 2022. She earned a B.A., Fine Arts and Advertising from Louisiana State University and an M.I.LS. from UNCG.
Also an alumnus, Dr. Ernest Grant is the immediate past president of the American Nurses Association (ANA), the nation’s largest organization of nursing representing the interests of 4 million registered nurses. He is the first male to hold the position. A distinguished leader, Dr. Grant has over 40 years of nursing experience and is an internationally recognized burn-care and fire-safety expert. He is a 2023 inductee into the North Carolina Nurses Hall of Fame, and the 2022 recipient of the Nightingale Award, given by the Foundation of New York State Nurses. Modern Healthcare named Grant one of the 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives in 2022. He was also selected by the US Celebration of World Standards Day Planning Committee as the 2021 recipient of the Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award in recognition of decades of work in burn care and prevention.?Grant currently serves as Vice Dean of the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging with Duke University’s School of Nursing. He holds a B.S.N. degree from North Carolina Central University and M.S.N. and Ph.D. degrees from UNCG. Grant previously served on UNCG’s School of Nursing Advisory Board and was named Alumni of the Year in 2003. He was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Nursing in 2014.
R. Timothy “Tim” Rice is former CEO and current CEO emeritus of Cone Health. For more than 35 years in the Greensboro health community, Rice has been a champion for improving care and building community connections. As CEO of Cone Health, he strengthened ties with UNCG, Guilford Technical Community College, and other Triad institutions. Since retiring in 2014, Rice has refocused his energy on mentoring and sharing his philosophy on leadership in a fast moving, volatile healthcare and business environment through teaching and meeting facilitation. Rice has served as a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and on the Center for Creative Leadership’s Board of Governors. He received a B.S. in Pharmacy from Washington State University and a M.H.A. from Duke University. He is a past recipient of the Greensboro Chamber’s Thomas Z. Osborne Award and the Distinguished Service Award from the North Carolina Hospital Association. Rice was keynote speaker at UNCG’s May 2015 commencement ceremony, where he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. His previous service to UNCG includes the Excellence Foundation Board, Board of Visitors, Union Square Campus Board, and the School of Nursing Advisory Board. Prior to joining the UNCG Board, Rice served two terms as a trustee at North Carolina A&T.
