UNCG Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Samford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team split a doubleheader with Samford on Saturday taking game one 3-1 and then falling 6-5 at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

UNCG is now 31-12 overall and 8-3 in The Southern Conference (SoCon) and Samford is 28-16 overall and 9-2 in the league.

Game 1: UNCG 3 – SAM 1

The first three innings were scoreless for both teams, as Samford tallied its first hit in the bottom of the second.
Grace Loftin registered the Spartan’s first hit of the game in the bottom of the third, a double to right field bringing her season total to 10.
Samford was able to push the first run of the game across home plate as Olivia Shaw led off the top of the fourth with a walk.
Katie Campbell then followed with a double to right field for a 1-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, UNCG responded with a run to tie the game, 1-1. Meredith Harwood was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and Rylie Williams pinch ran for her. She was moved over on a sacrifice bunt and a single to get in scoring position for Loftin’s second double of the game.
After three quick outs for the Spartans on defense, Jessie Shipley doubled to right center with one out and Hadley Gardner drove her in with her own double for a 2-1 lead.
Following the second out, Macy Michael singled to right center and Gardner scored from second extending UNCG’s lead to two, 3-1.
Jorde Chartrand held on for the win by retiring the side on two pop outs and a line drive.

NOTES:
Loftin was the lone Spartan with a multi-hit game, swinging 2-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI.
Gardner swung 1-for-2 with one run scored, a double and one RBI.
Michael went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Chartrand tossed her third complete game of the season and ninth of her career, striking out five batters, giving up just four hits and one earned run.

Game 2: UNCG 5 – SAM 6
The Spartans’ bats acted quick in the second game, scoring five runs between the first two innings.
In the bottom of the first with one out, Kaylyn Belfield singled and Loftin drove her around on a double to center field for a 1-0 advantage.
Jessie Shipley then followed with a single down the left-field line giving UNCG a 2-0 lead.
Betsy Eatmon kicked off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to center field, extending UNCG’s lead to 3-0.
Loftin then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive home Macy Michael from third, 4-0, before Chartrand added to the damage with a RBI single for a 5-0 lead.
Reese Byrd retired seven-straight batters through the top of the third before Samford responded with five runs on five hits to tie the game, 5-5.
In the top of the fifth with no outs and runners on the corners, Campbell reached on a fielder’s choice giving MacKayla Cothran time to score for the lead, 6-5.
The Bulldogs held off the Spartans in the final innings, not allowing a runner to reach base to secure the 6-5 the win.

NOTES:
Eatmon hit her second home run of the season and 10th of her career.
Seven different Spartans recorded a hit.
Chartrand tossed 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and striking out three batters.
Loftin went 1-for-3 with one run scored, two RBI and one double.
Chartrand, Shipley and Eatmon each had an RBI.

The Spartans will conclude the series with a single game tomorrow at the UNCG Softball Stadium with a first pitch slated at 1:00 p.m.
