UNCG Softball Takes Series Over Samford with 5-3 Victory on Sunday
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team fought past the Samford Bulldogs with a 5-3 victory on Sunday to take the series two games to one at UNCG Softball Stadium.
UNCG is now 32-12 overall and 9-3 in The Southern Conference (SoCon) and Samford is 28-17 overall and 9-3 in the league. With the win, UNCG and Samford are tied for first with a .750 SoCon win percentage, but the Spartans have the edge since they won the series 2-1.
Salem Ward and the Spartan defense retired three straight in the top of the first and were able to put a run on the board in the bottom of the frame.
With one out and the bases loaded, Betsy Eatmon singled to center field to score Kaylyn Belfield, giving UNCG a 1-0 advantage.
UNCG’s lead was short lived with Samford’s three-run second inning for a 3-1 lead. All with one out, the Bulldogs saw a two-run single from Ella Nelson and a RBI single from Joi Hubbard.
In the bottom of the third, Belfield reached on a fielding error and Grace Loftin walked before Eatmon’s double to left-center brought both home to tie the game, 3-3.
With two outs, Hadley Gardner replaced Eatmon on second with her own double that gave the Spartans a 4-3 advantage.
After two scoreless innings, Gardner chose the first pitch during her at bat in the bottom of the sixth and sent it over the left-field wall to extend UNCG’s lead to two, 5-3.
Jorde Chartrand kept Samford’s bats out of reach by retiring three batters in the top of the seventh on a line drive to second and two fly outs to secure the win.
NOTES:
Eatmon went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run scored and a double.
Gardner went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run scored, a home run and a double.
Gardner’s homer was her ninth of the season
Chartrand pitched 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one batter.
