Two days after Carson Hocevar finished 34th in the NASCAR Cup Series race in Mexico City, Spire Motorsports fined the second-year driver $50,000 after he made insensitive comments about Mexico City during a Twitch livestream.

Hocevar, who commonly streams on Twitch, called Mexico City a, “(expletive) hole” while discussing the experience of participating in the first international Cup Series points race since 1958.

Carson Hocevar said,
“This whole experience, if the travel was better, if getting here was easier, if you felt safer getting to and from everywhere, if it wasn’t such a [expletive] hole, if the track limits were a little better enforced, if it was going to be a little better race and it (didn’t) feel so locked down, like you can’t leave anywhere, it would be a great experience. It would be an absolute great experience. If you take all those out, it’s unbelievable. it’s great.”

On Tuesday, Spire Motorsports announced an internal penalty for Hocevar’s remarks, which included the $50,000 fine. That money will be split between three organizations that “serve Mexican communities,” which include the Mexican Red Cross, a nonprofit that combats child malnutrition and United Way Mexico.

Hocevar will also be required participate in cultural sensitivity and bias-awareness training.

According to the team, NASCAR approved of the disciplinary measures handed down to Hocevar.

Hocevar enters Sunday’s race at Pocono Raceway 20th in the Cup Series standings following a frustrating race in Mexico City that included another spat with HYAK Motorsports driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

Hocevar has been quick over the last month of his sophomore season in the Cup Series, but Tuesday’s announcement certainly puts a damper on what has otherwise been a solid season.
