Ahead of Labor Day weekend, two Thursday night football games took place. Magna Vista crossed the state line to put away Rockingham County, 39-0, while another blowout was taking place in Wilkes County, where McMichael only put up 14 points to Wilkes Central’s 47.
McMichael took their bye week in week one and, therefore, played in their first game of the season against a 1-0 Wilkes Central Eagles team. While McMichael responded to an early Wilkes Central touchdown with one of their own to tie it at seven, that was about the only high spot. Wilkes Central put up touchdown after touchdown after this, ultimately winning it, 47-14. McMichael cannot lick their wounds for too long, however, as they have to prepare to face South Stokes (0-1, 2A) next Friday.
Morehead did not play, as they will be taking on Providence Grove (3A, 0-1) tomorrow for the usual Friday night football.. That action will be down in Climax, North Carolina, nearly seventy miles south of Eden. The Panthers will try to get some momentum rolling after their 46-0 loss last week to Northeast Guilford, one which they would like to erase from memory.
Like Morehead, Reidsville did not take the field on Thursday as they will be battling George Washington High School (0-0, VA 4A) tomorrow evening in the Football Capital of NC. This is an exceptionally important game for a Reidsville team that is coming off of a rare game-one loss, albeit to an impressive Northern Guilford team. Reidsville has not started 0-2 since 2005, when they lost to T.W. Andrews by three and Morehead by six in high-scoring affairs. In fact, Reidsville has only had one two-loss season overall since 2016, so it would be a blow to get two losses before a single win, no matter the caliber of the opponent.
Rockingham County made a good defensive showing against a star-studded Magna Vista squad, but ultimately, their two interceptions and above-average run defense was unable to finish the job. The Cougars made a good showing in the first quarter and early in the second, but QB Simeon Moore of MVHS led his team on a tear through Rockingham County once the game got out of its early phase. Rust may have been a factor early on for Magna Vista, as this was their first game, and once they had shaken the dust off, there was no stopping them. The final score was 39-0 in favor of the Magna Vista Warriors. The Cougars of Wentworth, now 1-1, will face Western Alamance in Elon eight days from now.
Bartlett Yancey, Carver, and Walkertown will be playing tomorrow as well. BY plays the American Leadership Academy Johnston Patriots (1-0, 2A), Carver battles Winston-Salem Prepatory Academy (0-1, 1A), and Walkertown attempts to take down Parkland (0-1, 7A). Here are the rankings of the Mid-State Conference based on overall records. This is not used in determining the conference champion, as there have not been any conference games played yet, but it does give a general feel for where each team in the conference is as we head into Friday.
T1. Bartlett Yancey (0-0 conference, 1-0 overall)
T1. Carver (0-0 conference, 1-0 overall)
T1. Walkertown (0-0 conference, 1-0 overall)
4. Rockingham County (0-0 conference, 1-1 overall)
T5. McMichael (0-0 conference, 0-1 overall)
T5. Morehead (0-0 conference, 0-1 overall)
T5. Reidsville (0-0 conference, 0-1 overall)
