On the first Friday of September, McMichael was the only Rockingham County team to seize a victory. Reidsville lost to Reagan, 35-0, Rockingham County lost to Western Alamance, 28-8, and Morehead lost to Cummings, 23-13, with each of the three losing teams now with losing records on the year. McMichael, however, with their big 34-7 win over South Stokes, improves to 1-1.
McMichael came into their first home game of the 2025 season with a 365-day winning drought, but that all came to an end when they took the field against South Stokes, the team they had beaten exactly one year ago. They handled South Stokes, 34-7, for their ninth win in a row in the series. Ja’Keis Vernon had 6 receptions for 148 yards, a receiving touchdown, and also had a 56-yard pick six return, Trenton Leonard had 5 for 89 yards with a receiving touchdown, and Solomon Simpson and Aiden Curry did some dirty work as well. Jayon Moore had a 24-yard pick six to start off the second half. Kai Tart, their junior quarterback, went 16/23 through the air with 290 yards, 2 pass touchdowns, and a 27-yard scramble touchdown, while throwing two interceptions. All in all, it was a very good night for a team that achieved their first home victory in 693 days and their first victory in general in exactly one year. McMichael is 1-1 on the season heading into next week’s home bout with the Cedar Ridge Fighting Red Wolves (1-2, 5A).
Morehead went down to Alamance County and lost, 23-13, in their closest game of the season. They faced a Cummings Cavaliers team that had not won either of their first two games. Morehead has faced a rocky start to the season, and their three-game road trip comes to a head when they travel to Granville County to take on J.F. Webb (1-2, 5A) next Friday.
Reidsville had an intense struggle against Reagan High School, being shut out for the first time this millennia. It had been ten state titles, twenty-seven years, over ten thousand days, and three hundred ninety three games ago. The final score was 35-0 as the offense of Reidsville could not get anything rolling and the run defense was unable to stop the onslaught of the Raiders. There is little rest for the weary, as they travel to the eastern part of Guilford County to take on Eastern Guilford (2-1, 6A) one week from today.
Rockingham County lost their second game in a row this Friday, going down to Elon and struggling against Western Alamance, 28-8. It was competitive at the half, but ultimately, Western Alamance pulled away. The record of the Cougars now drops to 1-2. Rockingham County, trying to rebound, will take on the undefeated Asheboro Blue Comets (3-0, 6A) next week.
Looking around the Mid-State Conference, Bartlett Yancey lost to Northwood, 36-18, Carver improved to 3-0 with a 22-0 North Forsyth win, and Walkertown also kept their unbeaten streak going with a 44-21 West Rowan win. While Mid-State Conference play has not gotten underway, it is just two weeks out. The following standings are based on overall record right now, and while everyone is technically at zeros for the Mid-State crown, it is still worthwhile to look at where everyone stands in the non-conference play. To reiterate, this all resets on September 19th when all that matters is conference play for that conference title.
T1. Carver (0-0 conference, 3-0 overall)
T1. Walkertown (0-0 conference, 3-0 overall)
3. McMichael (0-0 conference, 1-1 overall)
T4. Bartlett Yancey (0-0 conference, 1-2 overall)
T4. Reidsville (0-0 conference, 1-2 overall)
T4. Rockingham County (0-0 conference, 1-2 overall)
7. Morehead (0-0 conference, 0-3 overall)
Next week, McMichael will play Cedar Ridge, Morehead will try to score their first win of the season against J.F. Webb, Reidsville looks to bounce back against Eastern Guilford, and Rockingham County tries to get back to .500 when they take on Asheboro in Wentworth.
