Hernandez Earns SoCon Offensive Player of the Week After Heroic Performance Against Dayton

Spartanburg, S.C.- Steven Hernandez of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s soccer team has been named The Southern Conference (SoCon) Offensive Player of the Week for after scoring two goals, including the game-winner against Dayton, the league announced
Tuesday.

The Winston-Salem, North Carolina native, earned his second start of the season against Dayton this past Saturday. He quickly rewarded the trust placed in him by scoring a goal in the fifth minute of action to put UNCG up 1-0 early. This was the first goal
scored by Hernandez since Oct. 10, 2022. After a few goals scored on both sides the match was tied 3-3 and a draw looked to be inevitable. However, in the 89th minute, a shot ricocheted off a Dayton defender right to the feet of Hernandez, allowing him to
score the game-winning goal. This was his first game-winning goal of his career to push UNCG past Dayton, 4-3.

“It’s a big accomplishment,” said Hernandez, “I was just happy we got the job done against Dayton.”
