The incredible season for the Eastern Guilford Wildcats ladies flag football team came to a heart-wrenching close Wednesday night, as they fell to the Cuthbertson Cavaliers 1-0 (yes, you are reading that right) in a marathon

Quadruple Overtime battle in the Elite 8 round of the flag football tournament in Concord.

The match-up of highly touted defenses ended regulation with a scoreless tie. The defensive war continued into overtime, where flag football rules dictated that each team receive a possession starting from the 3-yard line, with a successful score earning one point instead of the typical 6 you see in tackle football.

It took four grueling extra periods—a testament to the skill and tenacity of both defenses—before the Cavaliers finally found the end zone. The 1-0 scoreline signifies the incredible struggle, and unfortunately, it was Cuthbertson who delivered the decisive strike to end Eastern’s perfect record. That single successful overtime possession was only the second scoring play the dominant Wildcats defense had allowed all season! Speaking with Eastern Guilford coach Griffith after the game, “Our defense played great both games. Just couldn’t score enough.” He went on to add, “Very disappointed, but this is not the end for us. We are just getting started. I’ll be better, they will be better and we will be back.”

Though the final result is painful, the team leaves Concord with their heads held high after a remarkable, near-flawless season that showcased the heart of the Wildcats.
