It is all about Survive and Advance when you get to the playoffs and we had Two Guilford County Teams going into Round Four of the NCHSAA football playoffs, and now we have Two Guilford County Teams moving on to Round Five of the playoffs, with Regional Championship Games due up, next Friday night…Grimsley(13-0) is moving on, and the Whirlies will be staying home as the #1 seed in the 7-A West, and the Whirlies will be facing the Weddington Warriors(12-1) for the 7-A West crown…Northern Guilford(12-1) has advanced, and the Nighthawks will travel to meet the Watauga Pioneers(13-0) up in Boone, N.C., for the 6-A West title…Grimsley #1 seed, Weddington #2, plus Northern Guilford #2 seed, and Watauga #1…The Best-of-the-West battle next Friday night…

The following are updates on the fourth-round playoff game between Watauga and Sun Valley.

Watauga took the early lead 7-0 after Nyle Peays returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for the touchdown.

Sun Valley responded with a touchdown of their own from 14 yards out to tie it with 4:45 left in the first quarter.

After Sun Valley missed a 30 yard field goal on its next possession, Watauga’s Cade Keller found Nyle Peays in stride for an 85 yard touchdown reception.

Miller Hankins made the extra point to take the lead 14-7 with 16 seconds of the play in the first quarter.

After the first quarter: Watauga 14, Sun Valley 7.

Sun Valley scores on a 1-yard run and scores the extra point. The game is tied 14-14 with 5:30 left to play in the second quarter.

Cade Keller finds Bowen Mayo for a 57-yard touchdown connection. Miller Hankins connects on the extra point to put Watauga up 21-14 with 4:18 left to play in the first half.

Sun Valley scores on a 4-yard touchdown run and connects on the extra point to tie the game at 21-21 with 44 seconds left in first half.

It’s been Watauga’s quick strike offense versus Sun Valley taking its time as the two teams head into the half tied at 21-21.

At the half: Watauga 21, Sun Valley 21.

Sun Valley takes the lead on a 13-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good to put Sun Valley up 28-21 with 7:17 left in the third.

End of the third: Watauga 21, Sun Valley 28.

Bowen Mayo scores on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Cade Keller. Miller Hankins makes the extra point to tie the game at 28-28 with 10:51 left in the game.

Miller Hankins hits a field goal to put the Pioneers ahead 31-28 with 5:06 to play.

Everett Gryder intercepts Sun Valley with 50 seconds to seal the 31-28 Watauga victory. The Pioneers move on to the 6A regional final.
