UNCG Softball Blanks Kent State, Run Rules Canisius
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team secured its eighth consecutive victory on Saturday with wins over Kent State and Canisus at the UNCG Softball Stadium. The Spartans first secured the 7-0 shutout victory over Kent State before notching the 10-2 six-inning win over Canisius during the UNCG Softball Tournament.
The 7-0 shutout was the fourth of the season for the Spartans. UNCG is now 9-5 overall this season.
GAME 1: UNCG 7 – Kent State 0
After a scoreless first inning, the Spartans took a 3-0 lead in the second.
Avery Bouquin doubled to right center to score Izzy Eskew for a 1-0 lead.
Later Madelyn McKinnon reached on a fielder’s choice, bringing Bouquin home from third, 2-0.
Samantha Beck followed and singled down the left field line, allowing Rylie Williams to make it 3-0 Spartans.
The Spartans tacked on another run in third when Williams singled through the right side, scoring Bouquin from second, 4-0.
UNCG collected its final three runs in the fourth inning for a 7-0 advantage.
In the first pitch thrown of Laney Deane’s at bat, she doubled, driving in Beck and Macy Michael to make it 6-0, UNCG.
Bouquin then hit a single through the left side, bringing in Carr from third, 7-0.
Brooklyn Shroyer pitched a complete game, throwing six strikeouts and only allowing three hits with no walks.

GAME 2: UNCG 10 – Canisius 2 (6 inn.)
Canisius struck first with a two-out double to right center, scoring a runner from first, 1-0.
The Spartans responded in the bottom half of the inning, putting up three runs on for the 3-1 lead.
Kaylyn Belfield put the Spartans on the board first, scoring on a wild pitch after a leadoff double.
Later, on a 1-0 count, Deane singled through the left side to send Michael across home plate for a 2-1 advantage.
Salem Ward singled down the right field line to score Nya South from second base to make it 3-1 Spartans.
After three scoreless innings, Canisius cut its deficit to one in the fifth frame on an RBI single, 3-2.
The Spartans broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking a six-run lead, 8-2.
Michael reached on a throwing error by Canisius’ Rebecca Hai to make it 4-2.
Later, on a 3-0 count, Deane doubled to left field scoring South from second base for the three-run lead, 5-2.
Deane was eventually able to score from third on another Canisius throwing error, 6-2.
Williams secured the RBI single to score Bouquin to make the score 7-2.
Immediately after, Beck tripled to right field to bring in Williams for the six-run advantage, 8-2.
Canisius stayed scoreless in the sixth inning, as UNCG recorded its final two runs in the bottom half for the six-inning victory.
Deane launched her fourth homer of the season and 10th career blast with Jazmin Mejia on base for the game-winning hit, giving UNCG a 10-2 run-rule victory.
Ward and Nadia Andarowski threw three strikeouts apiece.
