UNCG Softball Falls to Indiana, Shuts Out Elon

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team fell to Indiana 11-0 in game one on Saturday and then defeated Elon, 9-0, in five innings at UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Spartans are now 12-7 overall.

Game 1: UNCG 0 – Indiana 11
After a scoreless first inning where UNCG’s Nya South tallied the only hit of the frame, Indiana pushed across the first run in the top of the second for a 1-0 lead.
Three scoreless innings passed until the Hoosiers broke the game open with six runs on five hits in the top of the sixth for a 7-0 advantage.
The Spartans put a runner on base in the bottom of the frame as Kaylyn Belfield singled down the left field line, but Indiana’s defense remained steady retiring the side.
Two doubles in the top of the seventh from Indiana drove in four runs to extend its lead to 11-0.
UNCG’s Ava Talley led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and with one out, Emma Clark also reached on a base knock.
The Spartans loaded the bases with two outs, but Indiana retired the side to hold on for the 11-0 shutout win.

Game 2: UNCG 9 – Elon 0 (5 inn.)
Laney Deane put the Spartans on the board in the first inning with a two-run home run to right center. This marked Deane’s 11th homer of her career and her fifth this season.
After a scoreless second inning, UNCG’s bats got hot in the third inning, tacking on five runs for a 7-0 advantage.
In her first pitch of the at-bat, Deane launched a ball deep into left field, scoring Avery Bouquin from second.
Hadley Gardner singled to left field, driving South in for a 4-0 lead.
Later on, Jazmin Mejia doubled to right center to score Deane.
UNCG got the 7-0 lead when Izzy Eskew singled to third base on a 1-0 count, scoring Mejia.
The Spartans posted their final two runs of the game in the fourth inning.
First, Gardner singled to left to bring Talley home, 8-0. A little later, Betsy Eatmon walked to push Mejia across home plate to make it 9-0.
Rhyann Jones went three up, three down in the circle, granting UNCG with the five-inning victory.

UP NEXT
The Spartans are set to conclude the UNCG/Elon Tournament tomorrow with two games. UNCG will face Indiana first at 11:00 a.m. and then battle Elon at 1:30 p.m. at UNCG Softball Stadium.
