UNCG Softball Rebounds with 2-0 Shutout to Elon, After Setback to Indiana
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team concluded the final day of the UNCG/Elon Tournament on Sunday with a loss to Indiana, 10-1, in five innings and then a victory over Triad foe Elon, 2-0.
The 2-0 victory was UNCG’s sixth shutout of the season. The Spartans are now 13-8 overall.
Game 1: UNCG 1 – Indiana 10 (5 inn.)
Indiana kicked off the top of the first with six runs on five hits and one error to take an early lead, 6-0.
The Hoosiers added another two runs off a two-run home run in the top of the second for an 8-0 advantage.
UNCG cut the deficit to seven, 8-1, on an RBI double by Jazmin Mejia with two outs in the bottom of the frame.
Indiana loaded the bases in the top of the third, but UNCG’s defense kept them scoreless.
Another two runs scored on an RBI double and ground out in the top of the fourth putting the Hoosiers up nine, 10-1.
With two more chances at the plate, UNCG stranded one runner in each of the fourth and fifth innings, as Indiana claimed the 10-1 victory.

Game 2: UNCG 2 – Elon 0
Elon threatened immediately with two outs in the top of the first, as a walk and a single put runners on, before a ground out retired the side.
Neither team had success in the second inning, as Elon once again stranded two on base in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the third, UNCG capitalized on a sacrifice bunt by Madelyn McKinnon that had Izzy Eskew advance to second and then make it to third while no one was covering.
With two outs, Avery Bouquin doubled to right center on a full count, scoring Eskew for a 1-0 advantage.
Following two scoreless innings, the Spartans’ Bouquin began the sixth with a single through the left side. She reached third on a sacrifice bunt and fielding error and then crossed home plate by way of Laney Deane’s sacrifice fly to left field for a 2-0 lead.
Elon loaded the bases in the top of the seventh in its final chance at the plate, but Brooklyn Shroyer struck out the final batter to hold on for the 2-0 win.
Shroyer completed the day with her fourth complete game, tossing 7.0 innings with six strikeouts and allowing just two hits.
