Baseball Honors Seniors With Win Over VMI, 9-6

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team bested The Southern Conference (SoCon) rival VMI, 9–6, at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Senior Day this Saturday afternoon. Seniors Jacob Budzik and Luke Jenkins(Grimsley High School) each went yard on the day with John Horton earning the save in the ninth.

The Keydets got on the board first as a single and an UNCG error put VMI up 1-0. The Spartans battled right back with a productive RBI groundout from Budzik to tie the game at one apiece. In the bottom of the second, Jenkins connected on a two-run opposite field home run, his fourth of the season, to give UNCG the 3-1 lead. VMI battled back with two runs of its own in the ensuing top of the third to knot up the game, 3-3. Jacob Dilley led off the bottom of the fourth frame with a solo shot, his eighth of the season, to give the Blue & Gold the advantage. Later in the inning, Budzik cranked a solo blast of his own to extend the lead to 5-3.

The game entered a pitching duel, as starter Mayson Dear did not allow a run for the rest of his outing, going seven innings, with five hits and a career-high five strikeouts. Budzik struck again in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single, his ninth this week, to put the score at 6-3. The bottom of the seventh saw the Spartans score three runs Off RBI singles from from Wyatt Bush, Brantley Truitt and Jacob Mueller to push the score to 9-3. VMI’s Grayson Fitzwater mashed a three-run home run in the top of ninth to give the Spartans some pressure. However, Horton was brought in with no outs and retired the side to end the game, 9-6.

UNCG outhit VMI, 15-8.
This is Truitt’s 14th multiple hit game of the season.
Mueller extended his on-base streak to 32 in the contest.
Eight of the nine UNCG starters got a hit this afternoon.
This is the third multiple home run game from UNCG this past week.
