Baseball Sweeps VMI, 7-4
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team completed the sweep against The Southern Conference (SoCon) rival VMI, 7–4, at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Senior Luke Jenkins(Grimsley High School) led the way with two hits and two runs scored.
After a quiet first inning, the Spartans got on the board after a Keydets’ error and a passed ball with a runner on third to go up 2-0 after two innings. UNCG added another run with a Jenkins RBI single to push the score to 3-0. Senior Hunter Shuey got the start and pitched five innings with four hits allowed, two strikeouts and one earned run. That run came when VMI doubled to lead off the fourth frame, then an RBI single brought the runner in to cut the lead to 3-1. The Keydets struck again in the top of the sixth after Shuey was relieved by Grant Aycock. VMI strung together a walk then back-to-back singles to score the run to keep the score close, 3-2.
The Spartans responded in the bottom half of the inning with a Brantley Truitt RBI sacrifice fly to keep the game at arm’s length, 4-2. The Keydets didn’t go away, as they tallied anotherrun in the seventh to cut the lead to one, 4-3. However, the Spartans tallied three runs in the bottom of the seventh thanks to four consecutive VMI walks and a throwing error, 7-3. Senior John Horton once again received the nod in a save situation. Horton gave up one run in the top of the eighth but worked his way out of it and then retired the side in the ninth to end the game, 7-4.

Jake Mueller extended his on-base streak to 33 in the contest.
This was Horton’s third save of the series.
