UNCG Baseball Falls in Quarterfinals to No. 2 Western Carolina

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The No. 7 seed UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell to No. 2 seed Western Carolina, 4-3, on Thursday night at Fluor Field in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Baseball Tournament. Hunter Shuey pitched a complete game with only three hits allowed in the contest.

The Spartans struck early with a Jacob Budzik two-run blast over the left field wall to give UNCG the lead, 2-0. Western Carolina cut the score down to 2-1 after a solo shot in the second inning. However, the Spartans extended their lead to 3-1 after a bases loaded walk by the Catamounts in the top of the fourth.

The Catamounts tied up the game in the bottom of the fifth with two runs to knot the score at 3-3. Western Carolina threatened again in the bottom of the seventh, but a Brantley Truitt catch and throw out at home plate stopped the Catamounts from scoring a run. Western Carolina strung together another rally in the eighth inning and pushed a run across to go up 4-3 entering the ninth. The Spartans were sat down one-two-three to end the game at 4-3.

Evan Myers: W, 6-7
Hunter Shuey: L, 3-6

NOTES:
UNCG outhit Western Carolina, 6-3.
Jake Mueller led the team with two hits on the night.
The Spartans left seven runners on base compared to the Catamounts’ four.

WCU: 36-22, 14-7 SoCon
