Dean Dease Receives Inaugural James “Rabbit” Fulghum Legacy Award at BODYARMOR State Games Baseball Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina Amateur Sports and the BODYARMOR State Games proudly presented the inaugural James “Rabbit” Fulghum Legacy Award to longtime coach and volunteer Dean Dease during the 2026 BODYARMOR State Games High School Baseball Tournament.

The award was established this year in memory of James “Rabbit” Fulghum, who passed away on March 10, 2026. Coach Fulghum was one of the driving forces behind the State Games baseball tournament, helping launch the event in 1986 and dedicating more than three decades of volunteer service to its success. His impact extended far beyond the baseball diamond as he mentored generations of athletes, fostered lifelong friendships, and helped strengthen the baseball community throughout North Carolina.

The James “Rabbit” Fulghum Legacy Award honors coaches who embody Coach Fulghum’s lifelong commitment to volunteerism, mentorship, and the development of young athletes both on and off the field.

As the inaugural recipient, Coach Dease was recognized for more than 30 years of volunteer service to the State Games baseball event. Throughout his coaching career, including his many years at Orange High School and now as head baseball coach at Durham Academy, Dease has positively impacted hundreds of young athletes through his leadership, generosity, and commitment to the game.

“Coach Dease exemplifies everything that Coach Fulghum represented,” said Chuck Hobgood, President of North Carolina Amateur Sports. “For more than three decades, Coach Dease has generously volunteered his time to provide opportunities for young athletes and has served as a mentor both on and off the field. He is a most deserving recipient of this inaugural award.”

The presentation took place at home plate during the tournament, where Coach Dease was joined by North Carolina Amateur Sports President Chuck Hobgood and Board Chair Melissa “Missy” Culbreth.

The BODYARMOR State Games High School Baseball Tournament remains one of the premier events of the State Games, bringing together many of the state’s top high school baseball players each summer. The tournament continues to reflect the values that Coach Fulghum championed throughout his life: sportsmanship, service, mentorship, and a passion for helping young people succeed.

North Carolina Amateur Sports extends its gratitude to Coach Dease and to the many dedicated coaches and volunteers whose service helps create memorable experiences for thousands of athletes across the state each year.
