UNCG Women’s Soccer Battles East Carolina to 2-2 Draw
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s soccer team played to a 2-2 draw in its home opener against in-state foe East Carolina on Sunday evening at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
UNCG outshot East Carolina 11-7 and put six of its attempts on frame compared to four for the Pirates.
East Carolina struck first just over three minutes into the contest. Lauryn Taylor’s initial attempt was saved by freshman goalkeeper Blythe Clark, before Anna Miotto found the back of the net at 3:11 to give the Pirates an early 1-0 advantage.
UNCG began to create chances as the half progressed and the Spartans’ persistence paid off in the 40th minute. Caidy Nelson set up Madison Bass on the outside, who found the back of the net with her left foot at 39:32 to even the contest, 1-1.
The Spartans broke through again in the 82nd minute, as Bianca Patik dropped the ball off to Laney Smith inside the 18-yard box. Smith’s shot was a left-footed strike that ricocheted off the post and into the back of the net for a 2-1 advantage at 81:49.
East Carolina responded just over three minutes later, when Caitlen-Star Dolan scored off an assist from Taylor at 85:03 to level the match at 2-2. Clark came up with one save in the 90th minute to preserve the draw.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
Bass scored her first-collegiate goal, bringing her career points to three. She had an assist last season.
Nelson earned her first-collegiate assist.
Smith registered her first-collegiate goal, bringing her career points to three after tallying an assist against High Point on Aug. 16.
Patik also earned her first-collegiate assist.
