Former Ragsdale HS football player, Kasey “The Kicker” gone at age 35: Kasey Redfern dies after 3 1/2 Year Battle with Cancer

Kasey Redfern, from Ragsdale High School, gone way too soon, due to Cancer…We used to call him, “Kasey The Kicker”…I remember one Monday night, it was a high school football makeup game, with the Ragsdale Tigers, down at the Southeast Guilford Falcons…Ragsdale trailed at the half, and their kicker/punter, Kasey Redfern was back at Ragsdale, finishing up a soccer game, and he made it down to Southeast at halftime of the football game…

He got there just in time, right as they were beginning the second half…Southeast Guilford was in the lead over the Ragsdale Tigers, but Kasey kicked off for Ragsdale and pinned SEG deep…Later in that third quarter, Kasey got the chance to kick a field goal, that would give the Ragsdale Tigers the lead, and he nailed that field goal, and Ragsdale went on to win the ballgame…He also was successful on an onside kick, that allowed Ragsdale to maintain possession and work much of the fourth quarter clock off…

He had just finished up a soccer game about an hour earlier, and got done in time to Win the Football Game too…His soccer team and football team were both Winners on that Monday night, and it was all because they had a true Winner working Double-Time/Duty for them….

“Kasey the Kicker”, a True Winner….

Rest in Peace:Kasey Redfern

from the High Point Enterprise:

Former NFL punter Kasey Redfern, who grew up in Jamestown and starred in two sports at Ragsdale High School, has died.

Redfern, 35, died Oct. 13 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he and his family had settled after his NFL career. He died after a 3 1/2-year battle against CNS (central nervous system) lymphoma.
(A rare form of Cancer.)

Though born in Columbia, South Carolina, Redfern lived most of his life in Jamestown. At Ragsdale, where he graduated in 2010, Redfern played goalie for the school’s soccer team. His kicking ability caught the attention of a football coach, and he was recruited as the football team’s kicker and punter.

That led to a scholarship to play football at Wofford College (2010-13), followed by an NFL career from 2014 to 2019. Although undrafted, Redfern made the rosters of the Detroit Lions (2017) and Atlanta Falcons (2019). Other years, he was a member of the offseason or practice squads of several other teams, including the Carolina Panthers in 2016.

Survivors include his wife, Lauryl, and two sons, Logan and Oliver.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Spartanburg, 250 E. Main St., Spartanburg, South Carolina. The family requests that attendees wear Captain America colors, especially blue, as a tribute to Redfern’s favorite superhero. A pizza party honoring Redfern will be held at the church following the celebration of life.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 24, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Spartanburg, 250 E Main St., Spartanburg, SC. Lauryl has requested everyone to wear Captain America colors, especially blue. There will be no receiving of friends, instead a pizza party will be held in Kasey’s honor in the Hangar at First Baptist Spartanburg following the celebration of life.

Kasey left a legacy of a man who lived life to the fullest, loved his family wholeheartedly, and loved his Savior undoubtedly. Kasey’s last few years were riddled with pain, sickness, and trials. Yet, Kasey will not be remembered this way. Every pain was met with purpose, every sickness was met with a fight, and every trial was met with joy. Kasey embodied the call of a Christian to live life in a way that represented Christ. He lived out James 1:2-18, no matter what life threw at him.

Kasey was born in Columbia, SC on September 26, 1991 to Kevin and Kelly Redfern. He lived most of his life in Jamestown, NC where he would always be found doing something active, with his brothers Kody and Karson.

He was an incredible soccer goalie, earning a spot on the Greensboro Soccer Premier Team and the US Soccer Development Academy U17-U18. It did not take long for a football coach at Ragsdale High School to notice his kicking ability. Kasey began punting and kicking for his high school team that led to a scholarship for Wofford College, where he played from 2010-2013. It was during his college years that Kasey came to know Jesus as his Lord and Savior, his greatest joy!

If you knew Kasey, he was relentless at becoming the best version of whatever skill he was striving for, no matter if it was building a bow and arrow from scratch, making the perfect cup of coffee, hitting the straightest drive, or having the best lifting form. It was not a surprise to many when Kasey began to excel in a way that led him to punt in the NFL. He played for several different teams throughout his five-year career, including the Jaguars, Chargers, Panthers, Browns, Lions, Cowboys, and Falcons. A devastating knee injury derailed his career, yet he never complained. God had better plans.

In the spring of 2013, Kasey met the love of his life, Lauryl, at a debutante ball. It was love at first sight for both of them! As much as Kasey loved football, he loved Lauryl even more. He loved being married to Lauryl and enjoying this life with her. Their first few years of marriage consisted of living on the road wherever his NFL career took him. After settling down in Spartanburg, SC, Kasey opened a coffee shop and began coaching at a local gym, two things he dreamed of doing.

In September of 2020, God blessed Lauryl and Kasey with their first son, Logan. God decided to grow their family again in July of 2022 with the birth of their second son, Oliver. Kasey loved being a dad. His sons were his pride and joy, and he loved showing them how fun life could be and how amazing his Savior, Jesus, is. He was a real life super hero to Logan and Oliver, sharing his love for Marvel heroes with them. If you spent any time at their house, you would see Kasey wearing something Captain America and Logan and Oliver dressed up as a super hero, just trying to be like dad.

On April 27, 2023, and in the days that followed, Kasey was diagnosed with a rare form of CNS lymphoma. No matter what the diagnosis was, no matter what treatment he underwent, and no matter what the doctors had to say, Kasey consistently had a smile on his face and a commitment to fully trusting in God and His plans. He fought this cancer with courage, resilience, strength, hope, and joy because of Jesus and rested in Psalm 23.

Kasey’s remarkable life allowed him to live out so many of his dreams. On October 13th, Kasey lived out his ultimate dream and stepped into eternity with his Savior Jesus. His tired body was made whole. His teary eyes were wiped dry. His last breaths turned into shouts of praise. With Lauryl by his side, Kasey departed from this life and stepped into the presence of King Jesus.

He is survived by the love of his life, Lauryl, and his two amazing sons, Logan and Oliver; parents, Kevin and Kelly Redfern; brothers, Kody (Megan) Redfern and their children, Knox, Elliana, Mila, and Maddox, Karson (Leanna) Redfern; his maternal grandmother, Shirley Frith; his parents-in-law, Greg and Robyn Williams; his brothers-in-law, Kyle (Sarah) Williams and their children, Raegan, Cullen, and River, Rion (Whitney) Williams and their children, Wallace and Lowery, and Todd (Katelyn) Williams and their children, Emmett, Sheppard, Piper, and Woods; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and so many people whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Bruce and Joan Redfern, and his maternal grandfather, Sherrill Frith.

An obituary for Kasey Redfern would not be complete without the one thing Kasey staked his life on: the Gospel. Kasey excelled in most areas of his life, yet he was unfulfilled. In college, Kasey recognized his sin and came to a saving faith in Jesus. Jesus welcomed him into eternity not because of Kasey’s successes, but because of the salvation offered through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. Kasey wanted every person to know Jesus and he wants you to know Jesus also.

Here is what Kasey would want you to know:

The bad news: We are all sinners and that sin separated us from God, who created us in His image. (Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23a)

The worse news: There’s nothing we can do about it on our own. There is not enough success, dreams lived out, money made, or good things to do to earn our way to God. (John 14:6, Ephesians 2:8)

The good news: Jesus bridged the gap of separation for you! (2 Corinthians 5:21, 1 John 1:7)

The best news: You can receive this gift through faith in Jesus! (Romans 6:23b, Romans 10:9-10).

Kasey would want you to know that no matter what happens on this earth, if you have put your faith in Jesus then it will be okay. There is nothing else that matters more than this. Would you receive this gift of salvation that Jesus is offering to you?

Pray this prayer: I am a sinner, and I want to be forgiven. I believe that Jesus Christ, Your Son, died for my sins and is alive right now. I turn away from my sin and now confess Jesus Christ as my Lord and receive Him into my life. I ask You, Lord Jesus, to control my life and I thank You for giving me eternal life.
