ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men’s tennis team had its seven-match winning streak snapped by the College of Charleston in a 4-3 loss on Wednesday, April 6, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Phoenix falls to 14-5 overall with the loss and the Cougars improved to 14-6 overall with the victory. Rodrigo Encinas clinched the victory for Charleston at the No. 3 singles position. Leading the way for Elon, Felipe Sarrasague continued his outstanding play winning his eighth consecutive singles match on the top court.
HIGHLIGHTS
Elon claimed a hard-fought doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Mario Paccini and Robert Lindgren came off the court first with a 6-2 win at No. 2, and Charleston tied up the point with a win on court three. No. 1 doubles duo of Petar Tomic and Chris Humphreys clinched the doubles point, winning in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-2) to give the Phoenix the lead.
Charleston was first to win a court in singles play as Zack Lewis claimed court four with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Vasily Kichigin gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 5 position.
Sarrasague extended his singles winning streak to eight matches, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 against Juan Estevarena on the top court. With the match tied up at 2-2, Paccini regained the lead for Elon, 3-2, claiming a 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) against Charlie Ghriskey.
Garrett Gordon’s 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory at No. 6 singles tied the match a 3-3 and Encinas clinched the victory for the Cougars with a 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-2 win on the third court.
UP NEXT
The Phoenix returns home on Sunday, April 10, hosting Furman at 1 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The match will be a SAAC Food Drive event to collect nonperishable food items and monetary donations. All food items and gifts collected will go to Allied Churches of Alamance County.
