GREENSBORO – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association held the 1A Track and Field Championships at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University. Mount Airy claimed the men’s championship with 57.5 points holding off North Stokes who finished in second with 56. The Swain County women captured the top team honors with 65 points, besting North Stokes who finished with 56.5.
There was one individual double-winner on the women’s side was Desire Brown from Heide Trask. Brown won the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 57.53 seconds and the 200 Meters in a time of 25.32.
Mount Airy’s Jo Snow won the 1600 Meter Run in a time of 5:22.39. She was also a winner in the relays as the Granite Bears anchor leg runner in the 4 X 800 Relay team that finished the full distance in 9:48.24.
The 1A Men’s meet was very tightly contested with the Mount Airy was led by Gabriel King who won two field events, the Shot Put and the Discus Throw. King tossed a 156′ 01″ distance in the discus, just three feet and five inches off of the state record, and threw a 51’04.25″ Shot Put for the win.
The Granite Bears 4 X 200 Relay team of Grayson Corbin, Cordell France, Malik Frost and Donovan Green took the top spot in the race with a time of 1:30.52.
South Davidson’s Men’s 4 X 800 Relay team eclipsed the 1A record in the event by 2 hundredths of a second, posting a time of 8:09.31. The members of the relay were Bladen Parrish, Austin Bond, Hunter Query and Travis Gallimore who ran anchor leg.
The 1A Men’s meet also saw three state records set by a wheelchair athlete. Ty’quen Fain of Perquimans High School set state records in the 100 Meter Wheelchair event with a time of 18.98 seconds. The previous fastest time in the state was 25.50 seconds. He also set the record in the 200 Meter Wheelchair event with a time of 36.29 seconds, which beat the previous time of 51.27 seconds. Fain’s Wheelchair Shot Put effort of 19’01” beat the previous state record by more than five feet.
