Hoppers Win, Hoppers Win, Hoppers Win, Hoppers Win Again…Now it goes like this, for this week…Tuesday:Hoppers 4, Asheville 2…Wednesday:Hoppers 4, Asheville 3…Thursday:Hoppers 6, Asheville 3…Friday:Hoppers 7, Asheville 0…Saturday:Hoppers 5, Asheivlle 3…If they Greensboro Grasshoppers can wrap up Sunday with another win over the Asheville Tourists, the Hoppers can claim the Sweep, and even their season series with Asheville, at 6-6…Win Sunday, and go 6-0, versus the Tourists this week…

On Saturday night, the Grasshoppers got a Three-Run home run from Tres Gonzalez and that put the home team up 5-3 in the seventh inning…The Hoppers trailed Asheville 3-1 going to the bottom of the seventh, and then they got it done, and in the end, they Won…Earlier in the contest, Nick Cimillo connected for his first Hopper homer in the fifth inning, to get the Grasshoppers on the scoreboard, and it was a solo shot by Cimillo to left field…

The Grasshoppers got super strong pitching by Jaycob Deese and Eddy Yean from the bullpen, as the two relievers combined to give up Zero Asheville runs, on four Tourists hits, with not one single Walk, while Deese(WP), and Yean(SV) struck out Four Tourist batters…Four innings of Shutout ball, and Four innings of Deese and Yean giving the Greensboro Grasshoppers a chance to win on Saturday night, at First National Bank Field….

And we save possibly the Best for Last…It was the “Catch of the Year” for 2023, and it came from Hoppers CF Jase Bowen, who ran back, jumped up onto the centerfield wall and scaled and hailed it, as Bowen caught the LONG fly ball from Jacob Melton to end the game, with out three, and it came in the Top of the Ninth Inning…Some kind of outstanding and crazy catch from the top outfielder in the South Atlantic League, and this kid ought to be on the Nooner to Altooner, sooner than later….

The ball off the bat of Melton was going, going, going, but Bowen was knowing, knowing, knowing that he would be showing everyone that he would make The Play of the Day, and that it would be his Game-Winning defensive grab for the Greensboro Grasshoppers….Some kind of play by JB(Jase Bowen), and it was JB, at FNB, with The Play of the Year, in 2023…Quite the sight to see, take it from me….

Tres Gonzalez had a super play in left field on defense eariler this season, but with the way Bowen’s grab ended the game, you have to give it up for Jase Bowen, for the Greensboro Grasshoppers Defensive Play of the Year….

More on the game on the way, and before we leave, we assign Tres Gonzalez, Jaycob Deese, Eddy Yean, and Jase Bowen with our Steak n Shake Players of the Game awards for this Saturday night win, by the Greensboro Grasshoppers…

Hopper hitters:Tres Gonzalez 1-4/HR/3 RBI…Jack Brannigan 1-3/BB…Nick Cimillo 1-4/HR/RBI…Sammy Siani 1-3/BB/Run…Maikol Escotto 1-4/Run..Wesley Zapata 1-3/Run…Malcom Nunez 0-3/BB…Josiah Sightler 0-3/BB…

Top Asheville Tourists hitters:Tim Borden 4-4/RBI…John Garcia 2-4…Garcia got his first hit as an Asheville Tourist tonight…Zach Cole 1-4/HR/RBI…

The Hoppers walked four times vs. Asheville pitching and the Greensboro boys struck out a whopping 14 times, vs. the Asheville pitchers…Without a doubt, very solid pitching all week long from the Asheville Tourists pitching staff…And they sure work their relievers long innings…Miley tonight/Saturday night, went the extra mile and more for the Tourists…I thought he would be gone, after that four-run seventh inning by the Grasshoppers, but Asheville trotted Miley right back out there, and ended up working the last four full innings of the ballgame….Four innings for the Asheville starte Luis Rodriguez, in his first start as an Asheville Tourit, while the Hoppers got five innings from their starter, Derek Diamond…Diamond gave up 3 runs, on 5 hits, with 2 BB’s/2 K’s…Diamond gave up a home run, to the Tourists’ Zach Cole…

Hoppers Steal Homer from Tourists; Hand Asheville 5-3 Loss
Jacob Melton’s Go-Ahead Home Run Robbed with Two Outs in the Ninth

from Doug Maurer at www.milb.com/ashevilletourists:

GREENSBORO– The Asheville Tourists continued their ninth inning fight on Saturday; however, Jacob Melton’s Home Run bid to put the Tourists in front was robbed at the wall. Asheville dropped their fifth straight to Greensboro, 5-3, thanks to the Jase Bowen catch to end the game.

Luis Angel Rodriguez made his Tourists debut and the left-hander was brilliant in on the mound. Rodriguez’s four innings was the latest chapter in Asheville’s impressive starting pitching all week. The southpaw struck out seven, allowed only two hits, and limited Greensboro to one run.

Tommy Sacco Jr. and Tim Borden II gave Asheville a 2-0 lead with back-to-back RBI doubles in the fourth. Zach Cole clubbed a solo Home Run in the fifth and the Tourists led 3-0. The Grasshoppers scored one in the bottom of the fifth and then four more in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead.

Asheville put two on in the ninth with hits from Borden II and John Garcia. Melton stepped to the plate with two outs and appeared to put the Tourists back in front. His blast to deep centerfield was brought back from over the wall to end the game.

Borden II went 4-for-4 with two doubles and Garcia finished 2-for-4. Deylen Miley struck out seven in his four innings of work out of the bullpen.
