Bill Belichick has embarked on a new career venture as a college football coach, but it appears the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach’s infamous obsession with secrecy lives on.
Throughout his 24 seasons as the head coach of the New England Patriots, Belichick became known for sharing as little information as possible with the media, opposing teams and fans. That tradition continued for North Carolina’s first game of the Belichick era against TCU on Monday night.
When reporters and other members of the media got to the press box at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, they received a North Carolina depth chart that was essentially blank. There were no players listed at any position on offense, defense or special teams.

On the surface, that might look like an oversight from the 73-year-old coach or a UNC staffer. Those who covered the Patriots during Belichick’s tenure with the team have probably seen that move or similar ones from Belichick on numerous occasions.
Belichick is facing a lot of pressure to win right away at UNC. The celebrity guest list for Monday night’s game was a reflection of the hype that has surrounded the team heading into 2025. If the Tar Heels do not get off to a good start, it won’t be long before Belichick is facing criticism over blank depth charts and other antics.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Michael Jordan was planning to be at Kenan Stadium to watch his alma mater play. Other famous alumni including Lawrence Taylor, Julius Peppers, Chase Rice, Blake Snell, and Mia Hamm were also expected to attend. They were joined by country singer Eric Church and likely many more.
