UNCG Softball Sweeps Mercer Behind 6-4 Victory
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team took a 6-4 victory over The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Mercer at UNCG Softball Stadium on Sunday to claim the three-game series sweep.
The Spartans had 10 hits in game two, which marks the 18th game this season with double-figure base knocks.
The Spartans are now 34-15 overall and 13-2 in the SoCon and the Bears fell to 17-26 overall and 5-10 in the conference.
After a scoreless first inning, the Spartans capitalized on an RBI double from Salem Ward with two outs, giving UNCG a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
Mercer tied the game in the top of the third from Isabel Fernandez’s solo homer, 1-1.
The Spartans added five runs on five hits in the bottom of the third to give UNCG a 6-1 cushion.
With one out and runners on second and third, Nya South singled to center field driving home Macy Michael and Kaylyn Belfield, 3-1.
Then with two outs, Rylie Williams hit her second-career triple to right center adding another two runs to the board for a 5-1 advantage.
Ward then hit an infield single that brought in Williams for the final run of the inning, 6-1.
In the top of the sixth inning, Mercer tacked on a run on a wild pitch, cutting the deficit to four, 6-2.
The Bears kept the Spartans scoreless from the fourth on and then capitalized on four hits to score two runs in the top of the seventh, 6-4.
Brooklyn Shroyer came in relief and retired the side with a pop up to earn the save.

UP NEXT
UNCG will travel to Buies Creek, North Carolina, on Wednesday to face Campbell for its final non-conference regular season matchup at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium. The game is set for 5:00 p.m.
