The Kansas City Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce as international superstars in their own sport. The city could soon have Mo Salah.

The Kansas City Chiefs are in one of the world’s premier sports cities, believe it or not. You have the Chiefs, a dynasty in the NFL. Then there are the Royals, who have two World Series championships, and Sporting Kansas City, who have also won two MLS Cups.

And the city also has some superstars. Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are considered global superstars. They’ve played so many games in other countries and have such a big brand that they have earned that title. Bobby Whitt, the Royals’ best player, is a top-three player in the MLB. And now, KC could be welcoming a new superstar.

According to Paul Tenorio and Tom Bogert of The Athletic, Sporting KC is extremely interested in Egyptian and former Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah. He was once considered the best football player in the world, and he could be joining Sporting KC. Now it’s still a long shot, but they have to try.

“Sources indicate Salah prefers to remain in Europe, but, as he mulls his options, he remains open to a move to MLS. Long shot for sure, but many conversations are happening, and there are no limitations on what is possible. The goal is to get back to winning quickly. This is not a multi-year turnaround.”

Getting Mohammed Salah would be huge for KC
Salah is one of the best English Premier League players ever. He’s played at Liverpool, one of the biggest clubs in the world, for the majority of his career. In 2017, he nearly broke the record for most goals in an EPL season with 32. In 2024, just a year ago, he finished with 28 goals and 18 assists, two shy of the assist record.

It was truly one of the best seasons we have seen. Then this past season, he didn’t play as well, with just seven goals and seven assists. He was also pulled from the starting lineup at times.

After Egypt’s successful World Cup showing, many have realized that Salah still has a lot left to give. He could switch to the MLS, a league widely regarded as one of the lower-tier leagues in the world. And he would be the best player in the league instantly. Sporting KC would be a world of fun to watch

We’ve seen guys like Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovi? make the move to the MLS later in their careers. The American league has greatly benefited from that. Now it’s time for the team in KC to benefit from it. Now imagine another global superstar in the town, walking around and being a KC citizen. It would be pretty cool. It seems to be possible, but there are only talks going on right now. This is still a long shot.
