There have been some significant changes at the Buffalo Bills this offseason and they may have unearthed some frustrations surrounding Josh Allen.
The 30-year-old quarterback has only ever played under Sean McDermott having been drafted in the 2018 class.
However, McDermott has now departed Buffalo following almost 10 years of service at Highmark Stadium.
Joe Brady has now taken over in Buffalo and his hire has already seen ‘whispers’ of frustrations emerge over the power Allen has previously held over the Bills’ scheme.
The Bills have infamously never been to the Super Bowl with Allen as their quarterback despite numerous runs deep into the playoffs.
Change has finally been sanctioned in Buffalo and this may require Allen to relinquish some of the power he held in calling protection schemes.
What sources are saying about Josh Allen’s power at the Buffalo Bills
The Bills made it to the Divisional round last season, where they were beaten by the Denver Broncos in what proved to be McDermott’s final game.
For whatever reason, Allen has not been able to drag the Bills over the line, which has now seen change brought to the franchise ahead of their stadium move
“Before, with Sean McDermott, he [Allen] was in charge, also a defensive pedigree. I’m sure he went along with a lot of stuff Josh Allen wanted to do, but there was a little bit more of a check and balance there,” said Mike Sando.
“I’ve heard whispers and people complaining a little bit in the league about the fact that Josh Allen gets to kind of do the pass protections how he wants them. I think that’s been a little bit of a source of frustration on the staff at times in the past. Is that a good or a bad thing?”
Clearly, Allen is one of the best quarterbacks in the league and was still able to lead the Bills to a 12-5 record last season.
But the Bills are missing something to drag them over the line and into a Super Bowl.
Although Sando is not necessarily saying that Allen is the reason as to why the Bills have been unable to reach the Super Bowl, his suggestion is that the QB may have to alter his ways slightly.
It is only natural for a player of Allen’s quality to hold a lot of power, but the former offensive coordinator, Brady, will need to put his own stamp on the team going into the new season.
Brady will require Allen on his side, but he will also surely want to be calling the shots on the sidelines at Highmark Stadium.
