DURHAM, North Carolina – North Carolina Amateur Sports (NCAS) has announced the addition of Austin Petty, Chris Derrick, and Dereck Whittenburg to its Board of Directors, bringing new leadership and experience to the organization as it continues its mission of providing exceptional sporting experiences across North Carolina.
“We are excited to welcome Austin, Chris, and Dereck to the North Carolina Amateur Sports Board of Directors,” said Chuck Hobgood, President of NCAS. “Their combined experience, unique perspectives, and passion for sports will be tremendous assets to our organization.”
Austin Petty joins the NCAS Board of Directors with extensive experience in nonprofit leadership and commercial real estate. The son of American race car driver Kyle Petty and grandson of NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty, Petty brings a lifelong connection to sports and community impact. He currently works as a commercial real estate broker with Coldwell Banker Advantage in High Point, NC. Prior to his career in real estate, Petty served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Victory Junction, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing life-changing camp experiences to children living with complex medical and physical needs.
A lifelong sports enthusiast and experienced attorney, Chris Derrick brings a combination of sports, business, and community leadership experience to the NCAS board. The son of a North Carolina sportswriter, Derrick grew up immersed in athletics and has continued to enjoy recreational sports throughout his adult life, including running, hiking, and mountain biking. Derrick is the owner and founder of Chris W. Derrick, P.C., where he has represented banks, corporations and advertising agencies in sports marketing sponsorships and promotional tie-ins with organizations including the Southeastern Conference, Major League Baseball, the NFL, and college and professional sports teams.
Dereck Whittenburg brings a distinguished career as an athlete, coach, broadcaster, and athletics administrator to the NCAS Board of Directors. One of the most celebrated athletes in NC State history, he helped lead the men’s basketball team to the 1983 NCAA National Championship. Whittenburg has more than 25 years of experience in college basketball coaching and has also worked as an ESPN analyst and regional NBA scout for the Utah Jazz. He earned an Emmy Award for his work as an executive producer of ESPN’s acclaimed 30 for 30 documentary, Survive and Advance, which chronicled NC State’s remarkable 1983 championship season. Whittenburg currently serves as Associate Athletic Director for Community Relations and Fundraising within the NC State athletics department.
