Borneo’s Goal Canceled Out as RV Men’s Soccer Held 1-1 by Dayton
DAYTON, OHIO – The RV UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s soccer team (1-0-4) played to the side’s fourth consecutive draw after a weather delay Saturday night against the Dayton Flyers (3-1-1), a goal from Caleb Borneo canceled out for a 1-1 final score.
Borneo struck in the first half for his second goal in as many games, the senior earning another start after scoring against Davidson last time out. While UNCG controlled most of the first half, the hosts battled back in the second to deny Head Coach Chris Rich’s squad a return to the win column.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Spartans entered the game with momentum from the start. Keaviano Francis and Lasse Dahl put shots just wide in the opening 10 minutes, UNCG’s attack settling in early. Borneo put an effort on target in the 12th minute, testing Flyers’ goalkeeper Santino Inkpen with a low drive. Pablo Torre saw an effort turned away just two minutes later.
Seth Wilson was called into action for the first time in the 17th minute, handling Dayton’s first attempt on goal from Miles Bonham. The ensuing counterattack by UNCG yielded the breakthrough, a long run from Trym Linberg past multiple Flyers leading to Borneo cooly picking out the bottom corner on the finish.
Wilson handled two more shots the rest of the half to keep Dayton off the board, but while UNCG controlled the game at the other end the Blue & Gold were able to get just one more attempt on target the rest of the frame thanks to Dahl.
It took almost 24 minutes for the first shot on goal in the second half, Steven Hernandez finding himself denied by Inkpen in the 69th minute after both teams had seen a series of shots either blocked or sail high. Hernandez had another attempt stifled moments later in the 72nd minute as well.
Inkpen’s efforts in stopping the Spartans from doubling the lead proved vital as the Flyers tied the game in the 76th minute, a shot from Braden Seel glancing off Mohammed Sumaila and past Wilson.
UNCG had three more attempts on goal the rest of the way, two from Tiago Campos, but the Blue & Gold were unable to claw back the lead over the final 14 minutes.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
Borneo joins Francis (three) as the second Spartan to score multiple goals this season.
Linberg moves into sole possession of the team-high in assists (three), having been tied with Dahl. He’s now equaled the amount he had as a freshman after five games this season.
UNCG’s 21 shots was by far the most this season, eclipsing the previous high of 13 against Davidson. Nine were on target, also the most in a match this year.
Hernandez and Torre tied Dayton’s Miles Bonham for the game-high in shots, with four. Francis and Dahl both notched three.
Shots finished 21-15 overall in favor of UNCG, the Flyers putting just five on goal.
Wilson ended the night with four saves.

UNCG concludes a three-game road trip back in the Carolinas on Sept. 11, heading to Columbia, South Carolina, to take on the No. 13 South Carolina Gamecocks at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
