UNCG Women’s Soccer Earns Late 2-1 Road Victory at Campbell
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Campbell on Thursday evening at Eakes Athletics Complex.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Avery Barr headed the ball to the back of the net off a set piece from Cornelia Winther who was about 20 yards out, for the 1-0 edge. Campbell answered 25 seconds later, as UNCG was called for a foul inside the box and Zahra Fepessi converted a penalty kick to knot the match at 1-1. The match remained tied through the break and the Spartans held the shot advantage, 9-5.
The intensity picked up through the second half, as neither team was able to capitalize on an opportunity. Campbell increased its attacking pressure, recording 11 shots and four of its five corner kicks after halftime. The Spartans’ defense continued to fend off the Camels until UNCG moved downfield for one last chance.
Laney Smith found herself at midfield triple-teamed and slipped the ball to Merle Greulich, who curled the ball into the net from the top of the 18-yard box at 88:41 for a 2-1 eventual game winner.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
Barr scored her second goal of the season.
Greulich netted her first goal of the season and sixth of her career.
Winther and Smith each recorded an assist.
The helper was Winther’s first of her collegiate career, while Smith tallied her third of the season.
Blythe Clark made seven saves in goal for UNCG.
Campbell held a 16-15 edge in shots and a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal.
UNCG earned two corner kicks, while Campbell recorded five.

The Spartans will return home and open The Southern Conference (SoCon) play with Western Carolina on Thursday, Sept. 17 at UNCG Soccer Stadium at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free for all regular season home games.
