SHELBY, N.C. – Kateria Peters (Wilmington, N.C.) made it back-to-back first-place finishes to open her career with Piper Campbell (Wilmington, N.C.) right behind for the women, while the men featured a tandem of top-ten finishers themselves en route to a third place team finish for the Guilford College men’s and women’s cross country teams at the Yeti Invitational, hosted by Cleveland Community College on Saturday morning.

Already becoming just the second Quaker women’s runner on-record, alongside Marion Cooper ’21, to win a race individually in GC’s opener earlier in the month, Peters re-writes the record book in her second competition, becoming the first on-record to top the podium multiple times in a season and career with her solo victory. Meanwhile, with her runner-up finish Campbell slots alongside Sommer Fanney ’18 as the only-two Quakers on-record to take second in a race, a finish that is tied for the fourth-best in program history.

Five schools sent representatives for the men’s race with a sixth partaking in the women’s competition, although only three squads factored into the men’s team score and one women’s team, Warren Wilson College, featured enough runners to qualify to score thus granting them the team win. The hosts, Cleveland Community College topped the men with their team tally followed by WWC with Guilford taking third.

The men opened on this morning with 22 racers taking the 8K course in Shelby. Yassine Aallam (Holly Springs, N.C.) led the way for GC with his second-straight top-ten finish to open the season, and the third overall in his career, taking ninth with a mark of 33:35.07. Tynarie Mckinney followed, surging in his collegiate debut with a top-ten finish himself, taking tenth with a 33:39.27 time. The next Quaker finisher with be in 19th as Landis Brown (Lexington, N.C.) posted a time of 42:52.20. Jaden Jones (Rocky Mount, N.C.) and Brennan Branch wrapped things up, taking 21st and 22nd respectively, Jones with a mark of 51:17.50 and Branch at 51:18.89.

Out of the 15 women to compete in the 5K competition on Saturday morning, all-three Quakers put themselves within the top-five. Kateria Peters paced everyone with a solid career-opening 5K time of 21:30.56. Campbell followed, finishing a handful of ticks off her collegiate-best mark at that distance, running a 21:42.48, good for her best time since she was a freshman. While her sister has stolen the headlines, the open to Kalaia Peters’ (Wilmington, N.C.) career should not be overlooked as well, as she posted her second-straight top-five finish, placing fifth with 22:57.63 time to round out GC’s runners on the day.

Guilford stays local next, shooting down to Kernersville, N.C. for the Spartan Classic, hosted by UNC Greensboro at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex on Friday, October 3. Official start times have yet to be announced.
