Women’s Soccer Takes Narrow ODAC Defeat To Eastern Mennonite
Scoring remains elusive in conference bout
from Bryce Johnson, Director of Athletic Communications at The Guilford College
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Guilford College women’s soccer team (1-4-2, 0-2-0 ODAC) dropped a tightly contested match to Eastern Mennonite University (2-4-2, 1-0-0 ODAC), 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at the EMU Turf Field.
EMU’s halftime adjustments made a major difference, quelling the Quakers usual second stanza surge, outshooting GC 9-5 in the second 45, and 12-11 overall, including 5-4 in shots on goal. Corner kicks finished even with three apiece but the Royals were far more physical, committing nine fouls to Guilford’s four.
Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) stood tall again against the 12 shots faced, making four stops on the five on-target shots, but unfortunately without offensive support, she suffered another tough defeat to fall to 1-4-2 in frame. CJ Jefferson improved to 1-3-1 making four saves in a shutout effort for the hosts.
Ashlyn Miller (Charlotte, N.C.) was aggressive, firing four shots with two on frame. Kylie Muse (Browns Summit, N.C.) and Ashlyn Kahre (Fort Mill, S.C.) recorded identical lines of two shots, and one on goal as well.
Karina Bondaruk fired two shots with one of them getting home for EMU for her first goal of the season. Bridget Hay, Esme Cardoso, and Hannah Kepler all added three shots and one on-frame each.
The lone tally in this one would come in the 36th minute of a first half that Guilford largely controlled. The Royals cleared out a GC attack with the Quakers opting to set things up out of a pass back to Motto. When the Quakers keeper made her distribution, however, she did not see Bondaruk, as the sophomore intercepted the pass and shot on a clear net into the bottom left for what was ultimately the afternoon’s only tally.
Guilford never got anything going in the second, getting outshot 9-5, and ultimately fell, 1-0.
Roanoke College comes to town next, visiting the women’s soccer team on Wednesday night, September 30 at 6:00 PM for the first home ODAC clash of the season.
