Brevard Upends Football in Final Non-Conference Clash
Shapiro flirts with century mark in defeat
from Bryce Johnson, Director of Athletic Communications, at The Guilford College
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College football team (1-2, 0-0 ODAC) was blitzed by Brevard College (3-0, 0-0 USA South) in the foes’ first encounter in nearly a century, 59-0, at Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center on Saturday evening.
The Tornados controlled the game in every way, out-gaining Guilford 486-173, winning the turnover battle, 4-2, and they never punted with their 11 drives finishing in seven touchdowns, two field goal tries, one interception right before the half, and kneel downs to finish the game. All the while, the BC defense kept the Quakers from reaching the redzone.
A bright spot for Guilford, Shane Shapiro (Jacksonville, N.C.) maintained his strong start, bringing in eight catches and accounting for over half of Guilford’s yardage, gaining 93 yards himself. Tristan Gabrels (Buford, Ga.) completed 10-of-20 for 123 yards distributing the ball, although he had two interceptions and also lost two fumbles. Evan Sullivan (McBee, S.C.) led GC on the ground, gaining 46 yards on 13 carries.
Brevard starting QB Christian Conley only completed 6-of-13, but for 137 yards with two scores and one interception before Chase Patalano relieved him and completed all-four pass attempts for 51 yards and a score. Miles Mason led their receivers with two touchdown grabs amounting 69 yards. Meanwhile, the Tornados approached 300 rushing yards collectively thanks to Favian Williford and Marvin Reed Jr. racking up equal lines of 11 carries for 73 yards and Zion Fauntleroy-McDaniel taking nine totes for 60 yards and two scores.
Defensively, Owen Whelan (Asheboro, N.C.) raised the bar again for GC, contributing on 16 tackles, although only four were solo efforts. Ben Finkelstein (Southern Pines, N.C.) and Simeon Reid (Morganton, N.C.) followed with seven apiece. Dwight Drew Jr. (Fayetteville, N.C.) had an interception for Guilford as well. Among the many impact defenders for the guests was Will Hadden III who led the way with eight takedowns. Sylas Scruggs had an interception and DJ Stevenson had a pick-six while Deshon Hadden had five tackles but with 3.0 going for a loss including 1.5 sacks.
It did not take long for BC to assert themselves, setting up shop near midfield after a big return on the opening kick then requiring just five plays to find paydirt on a Messiah Ramseur double-reverse run. After a three-and-out, BC then needed four plays to score again on a Fauntleroy-McDaniel run.
Brevard’s longest drive lasted a dozen plays straddling the quarter break and finished in a missed field goal, but they racked up the scoring in the second with a Conley to Miles connection, a strip sack on defense, another Conley to Miles TD, a fumbled handoff by GC, and a Conley TD rush all occurring within 69 seconds of game time.
In the third the guests got an 88-yard pick-six from Henderson and another Fauntleroy-McDaniel TD carry before Patalano found Jordan Barnett later in the frame. Then finally in the fourth, Spencer Crum connected on a 24-yard field goal to bring it to the final score of 59-0.
The Quakers host their homecoming game next, welcoming Roanoke College to the Gate City on Saturday, October 3 for a 1:00 PM kick.
