GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College women’s soccer team (1-4-2, 0-2-0 ODAC) was blanked once more in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action, falling 2-0 to Roanoke College on Wednesday night at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
The Quakers mustered just a single off-target shot in the match against 23 allowed to their guests, including 11 on-goal. RC also had six corner kicks against Guilford’s one, and committed six fouls to GC’s five.
Lorelai Lis (Bradenton, Fla.) got her first start of the year in goal and suffered the loss to fall to 0-1-0 after allowing two goals against six saves over 76 minutes before Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) took over and made a trio of stops. Grace Suchy finished untested in her third shutout of the fall to improve 4-2-3.
Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) was the only Quaker to finish with a shot attempt in the match.
Madalyn Szoke scored the game-winner for the Maroons with Allison Gregori adding insurance later on. Rebecca Carr assisted on each tally for the guests.
The game was played to a stalemate through the opening half of play with Roanoke taking nine shots against none for the hosts. The breakthrough would come shortly out of the half in the 48th minute. On a counter-attack, Carr fired a look from distance, one that was knocked away by Lis, but remained free, finding the feet of Szoke with a wide-open net and into the bottom-left to open the scoring.
The second tally would follow under 120 seconds later. A Maroon attack found a crease down the middle of the pitch as Lis came up off her line, sliding to knock away a try by Carr. The deflection rolled to Gregon, however, with a single Quaker defender and no keeper, from the top of the 18′, shooting into the center of the twine, bringing the score to the eventual final of 2-0.
Guilford heads up to Virginia Beach next, matching up with Batten University on Saturday, October 3 with kickoff set for 11:00 AM.
